WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (1-0) defeated North Texas-Dallas (0-2), 82-33, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, forcing 38 turnovers and scoring 43 points off those opportunities. The Mustangs also held a 45-37 advantage in total rebounds.
Midwestern State took control early in the first quarter against North Texas-Dallas.
Carisa Cortez initiated the scoring with a fast-break layup at 9:28, contributing to a strong start for the home team.
Ta'Leeyah Glynn made a significant impact, scoring eight points, including a three-pointer and a jumper, as the Mustangs built a commanding 25-6 lead by the end of the quarter. North Texas-Dallas struggled with turnovers, committing 12, while MSU capitalized with six steals, maintaining their defensive pressure throughout the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Maroon & Gold extended their lead over North Texas-Dallas, capitalizing on numerous turnovers.
Aniya Williams contributed significantly with layups at 9:47 and 8:55, while
Da'Lonna Choice added two free throws at 8:44 to increase the advantage.
Kerbie Cash was effective with her mid-range game, hitting jumpers at 7:40 and 6:41, and later at 3:43, Cash hit a jumper and two free throws to widen the gap further.
Veonce Powell's three-pointer at 4:45, assisted by Glynn, capped an impressive quarter for MSU, who closed the quarter with a 22-10 run. North Texas-Dallas struggled with ball control, committing 13 turnovers, which hindered their ability to close the gap despite Ke'Liyah Anderson's efforts with points in the paint.
The Mustangs dominated the third quarter with strong defensive play and efficient scoring. Powell kicked off the scoring with a three-pointer assisted by Choice at 09:45, setting an early tone for the home team. Williams contributed defensively with a block and a steal, while Cortez and Powell scored crucial points to extend their lead. North Texas-Dallas struggled offensively, managing only two field goals, while MSU capitalized on turnovers and free throws to finish the quarter leading 66-22.
The Mustangs secured a 16-point advantage in the fourth quarter, clinching an 82-33 victory against North Texas-Dallas. Midwestern's offense was highlighted by
Calyssa Sevier's three-pointer at 6:48, assisted by Powell, which extended their lead to 73-27. Glynn added another three-pointer at 5:44, further boosting their score. North Texas-Dallas struggled to keep pace, with Anderson contributing a layup at 4:59 to narrow the gap slightly. MSU's defense was also notable, with
Macie Upshaw blocking a layup attempt by Sanaa Murphy-Showers in the final seconds, maintaining the decisive margin.
Glynn led the team with 18 points, converting on 6 of 8 free throws. Cortez contributed 11 points and recorded three steals. Powell added 10 points and dished out five assists. Williams finished with four steals and six rebounds.
Anderson led North Texas-Dallas with 11 points, converting 5 of 8 field goal attempts. Kayden Riley dominated the boards, securing nine rebounds, including six defensive. Sophia Fisher contributed five points and two steals, while ShanDrea Yeldell added four points and matched Fisher with two steals. Jade Myles also recorded two steals and scored three points, including a three-pointer.
