Mustangs host UNT-Dallas in season-opening Sunday matinee

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State opens the season at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Sunday afternoon as North Texas-Dallas visits the Mustangs. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Midwestern State finished last season with a 13-15 record overall, and the Mustangs were 11-11 in conference with five losses coming by a combined 10 points.

MSU finished ninth in the conference and narrowly missed a berth in the LSC Postseason Tournament. 

The Mustangs were 10-5 at home last season and finished ninth in the conference, narrowly missing the postseason tournament, losing five games by a total of 10 points.

Kerbie Cash is back for her second season after earning LSC Freshman of the Year honors last season, when she scored 13.6 points and grabbed 7.4 rebounds per game and was named to the All-Lone Star Conference Team.

Junior guard Katy Greathouse, sophomore guard Carisa Cortez, junior forward Alyssa Hutterer, sophomore guard Calyssa Sevier and senior guard Catalina Cortez are all back from last year's squad.

Carisa Cortez started 26 of 28 games and led the team with 3.6 assists per game. She was the fourth leading scorer for the Mustangs last season with 6.1 points per game. 

Sevier appeared in all 28 games and also made 26 starts.  The native of Lytle, Texas, averaged 5.8 points and was second on the team with 46 steals.

Hutterer played in 28 games with two starts but played more than 20 minutes per game, averaging nearly four points and two rebounds per game.

Catalina Cortez appeared in all 28 games with six starts and dished out 35 assists while making 16 steals.

Greathouse, formerly Piper, appeared in 14 games before missing the second half of the season due to injury.

Aniyah Williams returns after suffering a season-ending injury in the third game last year. The junior from Marlin, Texas, was averaging nearly nine rebounds a game at the time of the injury. 

Midwestern State is meeting UNT-Dallas for the first time. The NAIA program plays in the Red River Athletic Conference and is coming off a last-second win over Paul Quinn as Kalyn Minor hit the game-winning shot with one second remaining, and the Trailblazers improved to 1-1 with a 74-73 victory.

The loss came to University of Science and Arts in the season opener. DeAsia Johnson scored 15 points, and Lauren Pete finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in the 83-66 loss on Nov. 1 at Ellis Davis Field House.

UNT-Dallas is picked to finish ninth in the Red River Athletic Conference, which includes LSU Shreveport, Xavier, LSU Alexandria, Texas-A&M San Antonio, Louisiana Christian, Texas A&M-Texarkana, Southwest, North American, Our Lady of the Lake, Texas College and Jarvis Christian.

Midwestern State travels to Central Oklahoma for its first road game of the season on Thursday. Tip off at Hamilton Fieldhouse in Edmond, Oklahoma, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
