Mustangs unable to overcome sluggish start against CSU Pueblo

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (1-1) fell to CSU Pueblo (2-0) 72-60 on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs recorded 14 steals and scored 19 fast-break points, but it was not enough as CSU Pueblo maintained control throughout the game.

CSU Pueblo established an early advantage in the first half, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Jaden Kennis at 15:45, contributing to their 38-22 lead over the Maroon & Gold. The home team struggled offensively, shooting 7-for-28 from the field, while CSU Pueblo capitalized on turnovers, scoring 23 points off the bench. Davyon Butler's layup at 6:41 and Charles Fofanah's free throws at 4:49 kept MSU within reach, but Dylan Sanders' consecutive 3-pointers extended the visitors' lead. The half concluded with CSU Pueblo maintaining a solid lead, driven by efficient fast breaks and defensive rebounds.

The second half saw CSU Pueblo maintain control despite Midwestern State's efforts to close the gap. Jordan Blair opened the half with a three-pointer, extending CSU Pueblo's lead to 41-22. MSU responded with a series of inside plays, including a tip-in by Terrance Ramirez and a dunk from DaCannon Wesley, narrowing the score to 41-29. Orlando Horton Jr. was instrumental for the Mustangs, contributing consistently with both layups and free throws, finishing with 12 points in the half. CSU Pueblo secured the victory with a final score of 72-60, outscoring Midwestern State 34-38 in the half despite the home team's strong push.
