WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State University (1-0, 0-0 Lone Star) edged out the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (0-1, 0-0 RMAC) 97-90 in a high-scoring contest at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. This game marked the debut of
Jon Trilli as the head coach of Midwestern State, adding an extra layer of excitement to the Mustangs' victory. The Mustangs secured the win with a strong defensive effort, recording 10 blocks and 10 steals.
Jonathan Jackson hit a career-high nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 31 points, showcasing his offensive prowess.
DaCannon Wesley made his presence felt with eight blocks and eight rebounds to go along with his 10 points for the Mustangs.
Antwan Taylor electrified the crowd with a slam dunk, bringing Midwestern State to within four points of UCCS with 2:58 remaining in the first half. The Mustangs had trailed by as many as nine points with 4:53 to play in the first half.
The game began with the Mountain Lions taking an early lead thanks to a jumper by Xavier Martinez at 19:38. MSU responded swiftly with a 3-pointer from Taylor at 19:16, equalizing the early score. Throughout the half, both teams exchanged leads, with
Jonathan Jackson's 3-pointer at 1:36 giving the Maroon & Gold a slight edge. However, Mario Williams Jr. of UCCS tied the game at 46 with a crucial 3-pointer at the 30-second mark, leaving the teams deadlocked at the end of the first half.
Jackson's sharpshooting was pivotal as the Mustangs gained control in the second half to secure a 97-90 victory over the Mountain Lions. He connected on several key 3-pointers, including one at 6:22, extending the home team's lead to 82-78.
Terrance Ramirez contributed significantly, both scoring and assisting, highlighted by a fast-break layup at 11:17. Ramirez finished with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting, and he dished out four assists.
Despite a late surge from UCCS, including a 3-pointer by Jayden Washington at 3:28, MSU maintained their lead through critical free throws in the final minute, capping off a strong offensive performance.
