Midwestern State makes fourth straight appearance in LSC semifinals

DALLAS – Midwestern State makes its fourth straight appearance in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship. The No. 2-seeded Mustangs meet third-seeded Texas Woman's on Thursday night at Patriot Soccer Field on the Dallas Baptist campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (11-1-6, 10-0-4) extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games with a 2-0 victory over St. Edward's in the quarterfinals. Marlene Myrvold and Nyxalee Munoz both scored their seventh goal of the season. Mable Pruter set up Myrvold on a corner kick, and Jasmine Montgomery placed a ball into the path of Munoz for the first assist of her collegiate career.

The Mustangs outshot St. Edward's 11-2 and limited the Hilltoppers to one shot on goal. MSU has not allowed a team more than five shots on goals since Southern Nazarene placed seven shots on frame in a season-opening 2-2 draw.

Midwestern State is outscoring opponents, 41-16, and takes nearly 10 shots more than its opponent per game. The Mustangs have 125 shots on goal this season, while their foes have only managed 50.

Lillia Besedin leads the team with eight goals and 16 points. Myrvold has 14 points, while Munoz has 13.

Mable Pruter leads the Mustangs with eight assists, and Leeci Snyder has set up five goals this season. Madison Brinkley has three goals and two assists, while Morgan Countryman has two goals and three assists.

Alinessa Salinas, Abbey Lee and Bella Rose have all scored two goals for the Mustangs.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Short has a 6-1-2 record with eight starts and 10 appearances for the Mustangs. The native of Frisco, Texas, boast a 0.79 goals-against average and has made 18 saves while allowing seven goals this season. Short has started the last six games and matched her season high with five saves in the 2-0 win over high-scoring Dallas Baptist in the regular season finale.

Short has split time with Tanner Sorenson, who is 5-0-4 with a 0.99 goals-against average.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with TWU, 18-9-7, and is unbeaten in the last six meetings, including 2-2 draws in each of their last two encounters.

The two schools met in the quarterfinals of the LSC Women's Soccer Championship two years ago in Denton, Texas, and the Mustangs pulled off a miraculous 2-1 victory. Allessandra Romano headed in two goals, including the game winner with eight seconds remaining in overtime.

In 2018, Hannah Schneider of TWU scored the only goal of the quarterfinal match, and the Pioneers eliminated the Mustangs with a 1-0 victory at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Texas Woman's (14-2-3, 9-2-3) has a five-game winning streak and is unbeaten in its last six matches after defeating St. Mary's in the quarterfinals on Monday night, 1-0, in Denton. Alyssa Striker propelled the Pioneers into the semifinals with a golden goal three minutes into overtime.

Giselle Gutierrez is the second-leading goal scorer in the LSC with 10 goals, and she is third in the league with 26 points. Jaida Arizmendi leads the Pioneers and is third in the conference with seven assists this season.

Gutierrez and Striker scored second-half goals as TWU overcame a 2-0 deficit to earn a draw with the Mustangs at Pioneer Soccer Park on Sept. 27. Munoz put MSU in front with a goal in the 14th minute, and an own goal in the 32nd minute gave the Stangs a two-goal advantage.

Goalkeeper Amanda Ferris made two saves against the Mustangs in their regular season encounter, and she is 9-2-2 with a 0.84 goals-against average. Faith Graves has started the last six games and is 5-0-1 with five clean sheets for the Pioneers. Graves has 32 saves and allowed just four goals, and her goals-against average is 0.48.

The winner meets either top-seeded Dallas Baptist or UT Tyler in the final on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
