WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (11-3-3, 7-2-0) secured a 2-0 victory over Sul Ross State (5-5-6, 3-3-4) on Senior Day at Stang Park, with a strong defensive performance contributing to a shutout.
The Mustangs have clinched the right to host the semifinals and final of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. UT Dallas could win the LSC regular season title, but the Comets are not eligible for the postseason as it transitions to NCAA Division II.
The first half began with Midwestern State creating early opportunities, as
Liam Pritchard attempted a shot in the fifth minute. Momentum shifted in favor of the Mustangs when
Parker Plaxco scored in the 19th minute, assisted by
Ethan Krchnak, establishing a 1-0 lead. The team continued to push forward, with Plaxco and
Italo Rodriguez testing the Lobos' goalkeeper, Benjamin Aviles, who made several key saves to keep the score close.
MSU maintained offensive pressure throughout, with shots from
Jarrod McKechnie and
Alan Rivera threatening to extend the lead. Despite several offside calls, the Maroon & Gold controlled play, while Sul Ross State faced a setback with a red card issued to Miguel Achique in the 31st minute. The half concluded with the Mustangs holding a 1-0 advantage.
The second half began with MSU maintaining consistent offensive pressure, evidenced by early shots from
Liam Pritchard and
Davis Mays, although both attempts narrowly missed the target. As the half progressed, Plaxco was active, taking multiple shots that tested the Sul Ross State defense, but goalkeeper Benjamin Aviles managed to keep them out.
The Mustangs finally capitalized on their offensive efforts in the 87th minute when Krchnak, assisted by
Cooper Tea and Rivera, found the back of the net to double their lead. The match concluded with MSU securing a 2-0 victory over the Lobos, ensuring a solid defensive performance to maintain the advantage.
In their next game, MSU will travel to face St. Mary's on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. CT. The match will take place at Sigma Beta Chi Field in San Antonio, Texas.
