WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 22-ranked Midwestern State returns home on Wednesday night after a convincing 5-1 victory at Texas A&M International in Laredo over the weekend. The Mustangs meet UT Tyler in a Lone Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for the 7 p.m. at Stang Park.
Midwestern State (5-2-3, 1-1-0) has won three of its last four matches.
Alan Rivera scored twice, and
Ethan Krchnak finished with a goal and an assist as the Mustangs overcame a 1-0 deficit and defeated the Dustdevils after suffering a 2-1 loss at home in the conference opener against St. Edward's last Wednesday night.
Christian Mezas scored six seconds from full time after assisting on Matthew Devaney's goal in the 53rd minute as Midwestern State fell to 1-2-1 at Stang Park this season.
Parker Plaxco scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 75th minute at TAMIU. Plaxco is the second-leading goal scorer in the LSC and with two assists he has the second-most points in the conference with 16.
Rivera has three goals and is tied with
Jaime Villagomez for second on the team with six points. Villagomez and
Cooper Tea have each scored two goals for MSU. Tea also has an assist for the Mustangs.
Villagomez assisted on the Plaxco's goal in Laredo, joining Plaxco, Krchnak,
Davis Mays and
Liam Pritchard as Mustangs with two assists this season.
Krchnak, Mays and Pritchard each have a goal and two assists this season.
Goalkeeper
Daniel Robles made his fifth start for the Mustangs in the victory at TAMIU and is 3-1-1 with a 1.23 goals-against average. Robles has allowed six goals and has made 17 saves for a .739 save percentage.
Jake Morris has appeared in six matches as a goalkeeper for the Mustangs and has a 2-1-2 record with a 1.17 goals-against average. Morris has two shutouts, allowed six goals overall, and he has made 12 saves for a .667 save percentage.
Midwestern State is outscoring opponents, 20-12, overall but has been outscored in its four home matches, 6-5.
The Mustangs have won all seven meetings with UT Tyler and outscored the Patriots, 19-4.
Midwestern State is 4-0-0 when hosting UT Tyler and won the last encounter at Stang Park, 2-0, in 2023.
Last year, MSU won the match at Citizens First Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex in Tyler, 2-1, as
Liam Kervick scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute. Robles made three saves in the victory for the Mustangs.
The Patriots have 14 players back from the squad that went 4-6-7 last season.
UT Tyler (3-5-1, 0-2-0) has lost five of its last six matches and is coming off a 2-1 loss to West Texas A&M.
The Patriots are seeking their first away victory of the campaign after suffering losses at Roger State (1-0), at Harding (3-1), and at Dallas Baptist (2-1).
UT Tyler has been outscored in its nine matches, 12-9, and the Patriots have played in eight matches that were either a draw or decided by one goal. UT Tyler has only scored once in the first half of a match this season.
Henrique Caputo, Noe Coutino and Luan Rangel have all scored twice for the Patriots. Oscar Sosa, Jason Verhoogen and Hugo Marques have one goal apiece. Danny DeMarais leads the team with two assists this season.
Niclas Becker has been the primary goalkeeper for UT Tyler with a 2-4-1 record. He has recorded two clean sheets and made 19 saves this season while conceding eight goals for a save percentage of .704, and he has a goals-against average of 1.18.
Luke Ryan is 1-1-0 with a 1.34 goals-against average and a save percentage of .625.
Midwestern State travels north of the Red River on Saturday to face Oklahoma Christian at Eagle Soccer Field in Edmond at 3 p.m.
