WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State Men's Soccer end the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll, announced the association on Tuesday afternoon. The ranking comes after the Mustangs claimed the programs first national championship, beating Rollins College, 2-0, this past Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Mustangs garner the top ranking the in the nation after ending the season on an 11-match winning streak. The streak for MSU began on Oct. 26
th, as the Mustangs beat West Texas A&M, 2-0, on home soil. Three more consecutive wins secured the Lone Star Conference (LSC) regular season title, and then Midwestern State beat two more LSC opponents in the conference tournament, to secure the LSC tournament championship. The Mustangs historic NCAA tournament run featured five straight victories, two in overtime, outscoring opponents 11-2 in a five-match stretch with four shutouts.
MSU are the only LSC team to finish the season in the top-25, while being one of five teams in NCAA Super Region 4 featured in the poll. Midwestern State return to the No. 1 spot in the coach's poll since 2018, while ending the season as the number one team for the first time in program history. The Mustangs finished with a record of 19-3-3, finishing second in the country for the most wins this season, only behind No. 3 Fort Hays State (20-1-3).
All five of the Mustangs opponents in the NCAA tournament finished inside the top-25 poll: Rollins (No. 2), Southern New Hampshire (No. 4), California State – Stanislaus (No. 5), Point Loma (No. 7), and Settle Pacific (No. 25).
