Bearden one of three Mustangs under par; MSU sits second at NCAA Division II National Preview

BOULDER CITY, Nevada – Midwestern State is second on the team leaderboard at the NCAA Division II National Preview, shooting 18-under 558 through 36 holes at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Mustangs enter the final 18 holes trailing Chico State by 11 strokes.

Seth Bearden is second on the player leaderboard at 9-under 135, just one stroke behind Ben Mouser of Chico State at the 54-hole tournament.

Midwestern State tied with Georgia Southwestern for the most eagles with five, and the Mustangs had the second-most birdies through 36 holes with 43, seven fewer than Chico State.

Bearden was one of six players with 12 birdies through 36 holes, and he shot 2-under on both the par-3s and the par-4s at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Anniston McIlwain shot the low round of the day at 7-under 65 in the second round as he reeled off three straight birdies on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 before he recorded an eagle at the 533-yard, par-5, No. 5 hole.

McIlwain began his second round with a birdie on No. 7 hole then had five consecutive pars before another birdie on No. 13, which was followed by a string of six straight pars. He closed the impressive round with a par at No. 6.

McIlwain, a sophomore transfer from Delta State, enters the final round in a five-way tie for 11th place at 5-under 139.

Ryan Griff carded two eagles on Monday, and he was one of six players to shoot 8-under par on the par-5 holes. Griff finished the day tied with nine other players for 18th place at 3-under 141.

Bryce Hoech is in a group of seven golfers tied for 39th at even-par. Hoech shot even-72 in both rounds, and he was 1-under on the front nine at Boulder Creek in both rounds. He finished the day with 10 birdies, including two in his final four holes of the day.

Nathan Nelson finished the day with an eagle and four birdies. The eagle came in the second round at the 582-yard, par-5, No. 2 hole. He birdied the par-5, 551-yard, No. 13 hole in both rounds. Nelson is in a six-way tie for 46th place at 1-over 145.

Hank Germany is playing as an individual in the field and had four birdies in the second round on his way to a 3-under 69. He carded an eagle at No. 13 in his opening round, which he finished at 5-over 77. Germany is one of five players in 52nd place at 2-over 146.

The final round gets underway at noon CDT on Tuesday.
