Sul Ross State gets first taste of Stang Park against No. 9 Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 9-ranked Midwestern State hosts Sul Ross State for its final regular season match at Stang Park. Kickoff on Saturday afternoon is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (10-3-3, 6-2-0) has won six of its last seven matches overall but is 3-3-1 at home.

The Mustangs are coming off a 2-0 win at Lubbock Christian on Wednesday night. Liam Pritchard and Liam Kervick scored goals for the Stangs, and Jake Morris made six saves to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season. It was the eighth time this season that MSU shut out an opponent. The Mustangs have not conceded a goal in any of their last five victories.

Midwestern State is outscoring opponents, 31-14, and averaging nearly two goals a game. The two goalkeepers, Morris and Daniel Robles, have a combined goals-against average of 0.88. Morris is 5-2-2, and Robles is 5-1-1 for the Mustangs.

Parker Plaxco is the second-leading goal scorer in the Lone Star Conference with nine goals. He also has three assists and leads the Mustangs with 21 points, which is also second among LSC scorers.

Alan Rivera has five goals and an assist for 11 points, while Kervick and Cooper Tea each have nine points with four goals and one assist.

Pritchard and Jaime Villagomez both have two goals and four assists for eight points. Dereck Espinal has also scored two goals for the Mustangs, who are putting 39.7 percent of their shots on goal.

The Mustangs have three players sitting on four yellow cards. Espinal, Cristopher Guevara and Skyler Krchnak would all face a one-game suspension with another yellow card.

Sul Ross State (5-4-6, 2-2-4) is 0-2-3 over its last five matches and is coming off a 0-0 draw against West Texas A&M on Wednesday afternoon at Lobo Field.

The Lobos are outscoring opponents this season, 21-13, but they have an 8-0 win over Adams State on Sept. 12. Sul Ross State has scored nine goals in eight conference matches and has not scored in its last 299 minutes. The Lobos have two scoreless draws — against Dallas Baptist and WT — and a 1-0 loss to UT Dallas in their last three matches.

Jose Ramos is the leading goal scorer for the Lobos with three this season. Diego Hernandez leads the team with nine points, registering two goals and five assists.

Sebastian Martinez, Lewis Coates, Caleb Castano, Jaime Martinez, Carlos Sean Rivera, and Diego Uribe have all scored twice for Sul Ross State.  Sebastian Martinez also has three assists.

Benjamin Aviles has been the primary goalkeeper for the Lobos. The Chilean sophomore is 2-3-6 with a 1.09 goals-against average, and he has five clean sheets. Isaac Poole is 3-1-0 with three shutouts in four starts for Sul Ross State. Poole has a 0.25 goals-against average.

Midwestern State won its first meeting with Sul Ross State last season in Alpine, Texas, 2-0. Villagomez and Tea each had an assist in the victory. Robles made three saves to get the clean sheet in the Mustangs' inaugural meeting with the Lobos, who visit Stang Park for the first time.

The Mustangs will honor their senior class before kickoff: Jarrod McKechnie, Liam Pritchard, Gabriel Gacovicaj, Villagomez and Robles will all be recognized for their contributions at Midwestern State.

Midwestern State closes out the regular season at St. Mary's on Wednesday night. Kickoff at Sigma Beta Chi Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
