Mustangs defeat LCU, 4-1, set school record with 27-game unbeaten streak

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (12-0-4, 6-0-2)  scored three goals in the second half and defeated Lubbock Christian  (6-9-1, 3-6-0) 4-1 on Wednesday night at Stang Park. The Mustangs set a school record with a 27-game unbeaten streak.

Cristopher Guevara put MSU ahead in the 29th minute, finishing from eight yards after Davis Mays had a short-range shot blocked following a long throw into the box. Guevara has scored a goal in each of the last two games. Earlier, the Mustangs pressed from the start, forcing Milo Paci into saves on Parker Plaxco and Liam Kervick in the opening six minutes and earning corner kicks in the 10th and 12th minute. After Lubbock Christian took two first-half shots that required saves from Jake Morris, the Maroon & Gold kept generating chances, including saved efforts from Alan Rivera, Cooper Tea and Jose Ortiz after the goal. The home side carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Mustangs turned a 1-1 second-half score into a 4-1 win, scoring three times after Lubbock Christian equalized in the 55th minute. Earlier in the half, Rivera and Plaxco put shots off target before the equalizer, and Morris followed with saves on Lubbock Christian's next two shots. From the 64th minute to the 74th minute, MSU generated five shots and three corners, with Plaxco heading in Rivera's blocked shot from short range in the 69th minute for a 2-1 lead. It was Plaxco's 13th goal of the season, which leads the Lone Star Conference. Lawrence Doe, Jr. added a goal in the 75th minute from just inside the box to make it 3-1, and Christian Castaneda finished a transition move in the 86th minute, assisted by Anthony Barrera and Guevara, before the Maroon & Gold closed out the final 4-1 result.
