ALPINE, Texas — Midwestern St. (2-4) secured a decisive 69-23 victory over Sul Ross St. (0-6), with the Mustangs' passing attack accounting for six touchdowns.
The first quarter began with Midwestern State kicking off, and Sul Ross State quickly capitalized with a 73-yard drive, culminating in a 27-yard touchdown pass by Kye Callicoatte to Yamil Oaxaca at 11:01. Despite this initial setback, Midwestern State responded effectively.
Sean Jastrab orchestrated a methodical 75-yard drive, connecting with
Demonte Greene on a 4-yard touchdown pass at 8:09, leveling the score at 7-6 following
Kohen Maroney's successful extra point.
After Sul Ross State responded with a field goal, MSU scored shortly after setup byÂ
Reginald Williams' 46-yard rush. Jastrab completed the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to
Case Peacock at 1:02, and Maroney's extra point extended the lead. The first quarter concluded with Midwestern State ahead 14-9.
Seizing the momentum, Jastrab connected with
Cedonyae Lott for a 21-yard touchdown pass at 11:22, extending their lead. The defense came up with a stop as
Carson Roper picked off a pass, giving the Mustangs good field position at the SRSU 40 yard line. Williams broke through with a 40-yard touchdown run on the first play after the interception, further widening the gap. Midwestern State capitalized with
Jamarion Carroll catching a 1-yard touchdown pass with 47 seconds left in the half, taking a 42-16 lead to the lockerroom.
The third quarter began with Midwestern State taking control of the momentum.
Cedonyae Lott's 45-yard kickoff return set up the offense near midfield.
Sean Jastrab connected with Greene and Lott on a series of passes, culminating in a 38-yard touchdown to Lott.
Kohen Maroney's successful extra point extended the lead to 49-16.
On the ensuing Sul Ross State drive, Midwestern State's defense dominated, highlighted by
Charles McKnight's sack, forcing a punt. Lott struck again, returning the punt 58 yards for another touchdown, pushing the score to 56-16 after Maroney's extra point. Midwestern State's defense held firm throughout the quarter, maintaining their substantial lead as the period ended.
Midwestern State opened the fourth quarter with a rushing TD, as
Jaden Coulter broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 62-16. Coulter found the endzone for a second time later in the quarter, punching in an 8-yard rush to give the Mustangs a 69-16 lead. Sul Ross State managed a touchdown of their own later in the quarter, but Midwestern State effectively controlled the tempo with a series of runs from
Christian Olige, running down the clock to secure the 69-23 victory.
Jastrab delivered a strong performance, completing 25 of 30 passes for 256 yards and six touchdowns. Williams made a notable impact on the ground, rushing for 157 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Lott proved effective in the air and on special teams, catching two passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns while also returning a punt 58 yards for a score. Coulter contributed significantly with 116 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts.
The Lobos were led by quarterback Kye Callicoatte, who completed 14 of 27 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing 18 times for 75 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Isaiah Pena contributed significantly with seven receptions for 101 yards and one touchdown. Yamil Oaxaca also made an impact from the wide receiver position, catching three passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, and adding 32 yards on two punt returns. On the defensive side, Evian Thompson was a standout with 17 total tackles. Brendon Martin added to the defensive effort with 12 tackles.
The next challenge for MSU takes them on the road to face Angelo State on Saturday, October 18, at 1st Community Credit Union Field at LeGrand Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
