SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State secured a 48-24 victory over Midwestern State at LeGrand Stadium on Saturday night.
Midwestern State opened the first quarter with a strong offensive drive, starting from their own 27-yard line. Quarterback
Sean Jastrab connected with
Demonte Greene on a key 24-yard pass to push the offense into ASU territory. The drive culminated with a 26-yard touchdown run by
Reginald Williams, followed by a successful extra point by
Kohen Maroney, putting the Mustangs ahead 7-0.
Angelo State responded with a scoring drive of their own, tying the game 7-7 with a 27-yard touchdown pass. MSU's next drive was hindered by penalties, leading to a punt and a subsequent Angelo State possession. The Rams capitalized with another touchdown, taking the lead 14-7.
MSU regained momentum late in the quarter, recovering a fumbled punt return by Angelo State. This set up a drive that concluded with a 28-yard field goal by Maroney, narrowing the deficit to 14-10. However, Angelo State responded swiftly with a 64-yard rushing touchdown as time expired, closing the quarter with a 21-10 lead.
Midwestern State started the second quarter with a determined drive, but after a series of short gains and an incomplete pass, they were forced to punt. The Rams then took possession and advanced into MSU territory, but a crucial sack by
Charles McKnight and
Kam'rin Devault halted their progress. Despite this defensive effort, Angelo State eventually scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 28-10.
In the latter part of the quarter, the Maroon & Gold showed resilience, orchestrating a drive deep into the Rams' territory. Jastrab connected with Greene and
Jaden Coulter for key completions, but the drive stalled at the ASU 13-yard line, ending in a turnover on downs. Midwestern State managed a few more plays before the half concluded, with the score remaining 28-10 in favor of Angelo State.
The third period began with Angelo State quickly building momentum by scoring a touchdown on a short pass after a prolonged drive. MSU attempted to respond but faced a setback when a punt was blocked and returned for a touchdown, further extending Angelo State's lead.
Midwestern State regained some momentum with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Jastrab to
Case Peacock, narrowing the score. Despite a strong 71-yard punt return by Greene, the Mustangs were unable to capitalize further, concluding the period trailing 42-17.
MSU opened the fourth quarter with a punt, setting up Angelo State at their own 36-yard line. The defense held strong, forcing a punt after a three-and-out. The Mustangs then initiated a drive, but after a delay of game penalty, the drive ended with a punt. The Rams capitalized on the following possession, advancing to the MSU 21-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
The Mustangs responded with a powerful offensive series, highlighted by Greene's 46-yard reception. The drive culminated in a 23-yard touchdown pass from
Andrew Knebel to Greene, reducing the deficit. However, Angelo State quickly countered with a 45-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, extending their lead.
Midwestern State's subsequent drive showed promise with completions from Knebel to
David Tyson and Coulter, but an interception in the red zone stalled their progress. Despite a strong effort, Midwestern State could not overcome the deficit, concluding the game with a final score of 48-24 in favor of Angelo State.
Case Peacock recorded 91 receiving yards on three catches and scored a touchdown. Greene posted six receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown, while also contributing 74 yards on two punt returns. Jastrab completed 20 of 38 passes for 215 yards and one touchdown. Knebel threw for 138 yards and one touchdown on 11 completions out of 20 attempts but also recorded two interceptions.
Midwestern State's passing game contributed 353 yards and two touchdowns in the effort.
Quarterback Braeden Fuller completed 9 of 15 passes, amassing 80 yards and three touchdowns, leading the offensive charge. Running back Cameron Dischler contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 154 yards on 10 carries. Wide receiver Hunter Wallis recorded two receptions for 10 yards, both resulting in touchdowns.
Defensively, Eugene Liger stood out with six tackles and one interception, also scoring a touchdown on a punt return. Akili Hubbard added to the defensive effort with an interception, while Owen Seaver recorded five tackles and one sack.
The Maroon & Gold holds a 2-5 overall record and is 2-3 in conference play. Angelo St. stands at 5-2 overall with a 3-2 mark in the conference.
Looking ahead, MSU is set to face Central Washington on Saturday, October 25, at Memorial Stadium. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
