CANYON, Texas -- Randi Harding's driving layup with 1.5 seconds remaining lifted West Texas A&M to a 69-67 win over Midwestern State Friday night at First United Bank Center.
The Mustangs (4-8, 2-4 in LSC) had three players score in double figures, led by senior Zarria Carter, who recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Kerbie Cash tacked on 14 points and four steals, while fellow frosh Carisa Cortez helped out with 11 points and six assists.
Midwestern State connected on a season-high 10 3-pointers on 24 attempts, including three from Carissa Cortez and two each from Calyssa Sevier, Alyssa Hutterer, and Cash.
Juniors Kyla Kane and Claire Graham led the Lady Buffs with 17 points each.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-6, Midwestern State went on a 6-0 run with 3:07 left in the first quarter, culminating in a triple from Cortez, to narrow its deficit to 14-12. West Texas A&M answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Mustangs down 21-12 entering the second quarter.
Midwestern State then started off the second quarter by going on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Cash, to take a 23-21 lead. The Mustangs proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 36-33 advantage heading into halftime. Midwestern State was strong from the arc in the period, knocking down four 3-pointers to account for 12 of its 24 points.
Following intermission, the Mustangs continued to expand their advantage, pushing it to 51-47 before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 57-47 with 31 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Buffaloes had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Mustangs still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-49 edge. Midwestern State took advantage of seven West Texas A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring 12 points off of the takeaways.
West Texas A&M outscored the Mustangs 20-10 in the fourth period for a 69-67 comeback victory, including Harding's game winning layup with 1.5 seconds to play that followed Hutterer's game-tying 3-pointer with 18 seconds to go.
