Stang Gang looks to remain unbeaten at home as they tangle with Aggies

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum seeking its 12th straight win under the dome.

The Mustangs are 7-0 at home this season and are opening a four-game homestand against Cameron on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Pierre Sanders scored a season-high 32 points and led Midwestern State to an 80-74 overtime triumph at UT Permian Basin on Saturday. The Mustangs overcame a 20-point deficit in the first half to improve their overall record to 12-4, and they are 7-3 in Lone Star Conference play this season.

Sanders is the second-leading scorer for the Mustangs this season with 12.8 points per game, and he is shooting 49.7 percent from the field (77 of 155). Sanders is shooting 44.2 percent from 3-point range (23 of 52) and is an 81.8 percent free-throw shooter (27 of 33).

The fifth-year senior from Hutto, Texas, is second in the conference with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.57, and he is fifth in the league with 3.7 assists per game.

Sanders scored 15 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds in his career debut against Cameron in December of 2020 as the Mustangs prevailed in their season opener at Aggie Gym, 98-75. In seven career games against the Aggies, Sanders has averaged 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

Mason Gibson is the leading scorer for MSU with 15.9 points per game, which is eighth in the LSC. Gibson has scored double figures in 13 of 15 games this season, but he is coming off a four-point performance at UTPB as the Falcons held him to 1-of-9 shooting from the field.

Bakari LaStrap, who missed the first eight games of the season due to injury, is scoring 10.1 points per game for the Mustangs and averaging three rebounds and three assists per game since his return. LaStrap was 8-of-11 from the field and scored 19 points in the last home game as MSU defeated Sul Ross State, 88-62, on Jan. 11. LaStrap is shooting 52.8 percent from the field (28 of 53) and has hit 24-of-29 free throws (82.8 percent).

Will Shepherd is coming off a 17-point performance at UTPB as he hit 5-of-8 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc. Shepherd is averaging 9.7 points per game and is the second-leading rebounder for the Mustangs with 5.6 boards per game. At home this season, the 6-8 senior forward from Dallas is averaging 11 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Reggie Hill is the sixth leading rebounder in the conference with 6.6 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. Hill has started the last four games, and he has scored 30 points while securing 27 rebounds in those games for MSU. The 6-8 senior forward from Melbourne, Florida, grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in three different games at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season, most recently in an 82-53 win over Western New Mexico on Jan. 9. He also had 12 boards in wins over Adams State and St. Edward's.

Jonathan Jackson is hitting 2.1 3-pointers per game and is averaging 7.9 points per game for the Mustangs. The 6-4 guard from Sachse, Texas, is shooting 42.5 percent from beyond the arc (27 of 73) and scoring 7.9 points per game for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs are third in the LSC with a 3-point shooting percentage of 37.7 percent, and hitting 9.3 3-pointers per game, which is second-most in the conference. MSU attempts a league-high 24.7 shots from beyond the arc per game.

Midwestern State has an effective field goal percentage of 53.4 percent, which is fifth best in the LSC. Effective field goal percentage accounts for the added value of three-point shots.

Midwestern State is scoring 77.6 points per game while holding opponents to 67.9 points. The plus-9.6 scoring margin is fifth-best in the LSC.

The Mustangs are 16th in the nation and second in the league with a field goal percentage defense of 40.2 percent, and opponents are only hitting 30 percent of their 3-point attempts against the MSU defense.

Sanders and Gibson lead the Mustangs with 27 and 25 steals respectively, and MSU is fifth in the league with 8.4 steals per game. Midwestern State is forcing 13.4 turnovers per game while only committing 11.8 turnovers, which is fourth-fewest in the LSC.

Midwestern State is committing the fewest fouls in the LSC with 14 per game, which is the 17th-fewest among NCAA Division II programs.

Cameron swept the two games against MSU last season after the Mustangs had reeled off seven consecutive victories in the series. Midwestern State is 56-32 all-time against the Aggies with a 33-7 record at home.

Jaylan Thomas scored 24 second-half points, and the Aggies overcame a 13-point deficit in the final eight minutes to defeat the Mustangs in Wichita Falls last season, 88-87. Two months later in Lawton, Oklahoma, MSU was shut out for the final three minutes, and the Aggies prevailed, 64-58.

Cameron embarks on a four-game road trip with a 3-5 record as the visitor this season.

The Aggies enter the game on Thursday night with a 6-11 overall record, and they are 3-8 in conference play, coming off back-to-back home losses to St. Mary's and St. Edward's. The Rattlers won in overtime, 91-79, and the Hilltoppers prevailed at Aggie Gym, 82-63.

Cameron is scoring 75.9 points per game while conceding 77.4.

Aaron Jacob is the leading scorer for Cameron with 14.9 points per game and is shooting 49.5 percent from the field overall (91 of 184). Jacob is a 42 percent shooter from 3-point range (42 of 100) and is fourth in the conference with 2.5 3-pointers per game.

Jacob scored 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting in the overtime loss to St. Mary's last week, and he finished with a season-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting in a 91-86 victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Jan. 9.

Jaxon Ingram is the leading rebounder in the LSC, pulling down 10 rebounds a game for the Aggies, who average the fourth-most rebounds in the conference with 38.1 per game, including 13.8 offensive rebounds, which is second among conference schools.

The Aggies plus-5.9 rebounding margin is third-best in the LSC.

Ingram, who is averaging 10.3 points per game, has five double-doubles this season. He pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds against UC Colorado Springs and scored 13 points in a 71-64 loss at Gallogly Events Center on Nov. 9. His most recent double-double was a 12-point, 14-rebound effort in a 65-58 loss to Angelo State on Dec. 16.

Ingram and Jacob are both among the top-five shot blockers in the league. Ingram is second in the conference with 1.35 blocks per game, and Jacob is fifth with 1.12 blocks per game. Ingram has 23 total blocks, and Jacob has 19.

Reggie Prudhomme leads the LSC with 6.2 assists per game and had a season-high 10 assists in the loss to St. Edward's on Saturday. The Aggies average 15.5 assists per game, fourth-most in the conference.

Prudhomme is fourth in the conference with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.04, but the Aggies turn the ball over 15.5 times a game, which is 14th in the LSC, and they only force their opponents into 11 turnovers a game. The minus-4.5 turnover differential is 15th in the conference.

Lavell Broadnex scored a game-high 22 points against the Hilltoppers on 8-of-12 shooting and is the second-leading scorer for the Aggies with 13.8 points per game.

Cameron is scoring 14.7 points per game in transition, which is third-most in the LSC.

Midwestern State continues its homestand on Saturday afternoon as Oklahoma Christian visits the Mustangs. Tipoff at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is scheduled for 3 p.m.
