Mustangs seek road victory at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State has won four of its last six games but is still is seeking its first road victory of the season as it visits Angelo State on Thursday night. Tipoff at Junell Center/Stephens Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State is 6-9 overall this season with a 4-5 conference record, but the Mustangs are 0-7 on the road this season.

Zarria Carter was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Mustangs to convincing wins over Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State. The 6-1 senior from Mansfield, Texas, averaged 31.5 points and 15 rebounds in the two victories, connecting on 24-of-29 shots from the field (82.8 percent) and 15-of-18 free throws.

Carter recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a career-high 37 points and 16 rebounds in an 80-60 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday. Carter leads the LSC in double-doubles and is third in the nation among NCAA Division II players.

Carter leads the conference in scoring and rebounding. She averages 20.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. Carter is the eighth-leading scorer in NCAA Division II and the fifth-leading rebounder.

Carter also has the best field goal percentage in the LSC, hitting 53.9 percent of her shots. She is 125-of-232 from the field, leading the conference in field goals and attempts.

Kerbie Cash is the second-leading scorer for Midwestern State with 11.9 points per game, and she is also the second-leading rebounder with 6.6 boards per contest. The freshman from Wylie, Texas, is averaging 14.2 points against LSC opponents while grabbing 7.7 rebounds in conference games.

Carter and Cash are both among the LSC top-10 in free-throws made and attempted. Carter is 63 of 92 (68.5 percent), and Cash is 51 of 69 (73.9 percent). Carter has the most attempts from the foul line, and Cash has the fifth-most tries in the LSC.

The Mustangs are third in the league with 42 rebounds per game, which is 30th in the nation, and they are grabbing 15.7 offensive rebounds per game, which is second in the conference and 20th among NCAA Division II programs.

Carrisa Cortez is leading MSU with 3.1 assists per game, and the Stang Gang is scoring 61.4 points per game.

Midwestern State is holding opponents to 61.5 points per game, which is the ninth-best scoring defense in the LSC. Opponents are shooting 38.1 percent from the field against the Mustangs and only 25.9 percent from beyond the arc, which is the fourth-best 3-point percentage defense in the conference.

The Mustangs lead the league with 11.5 steals per game, and they are forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the conference with 19.5 per game.

Carter leads the conference with 38 total steals and 2.5 steals per game. Calyssa Sevier has the fourth-most steals in the LSC with 28 and 1.5 steals per game. Emillia Steele and Kerbie Cash are eighth in the league with 26 steals apiece.

Midwestern State is 33-42 in the all-time series with Angelo State but won the last meeting, 75-73, at Junell Center/Stephens Arena last season. MSU improved to 8-27 as the visiting team in the series and earned its first win in San Angelo since 2017.

The Rambelles have reeled off 10 consecutive victories and enter the game with a 12-3 record overall, and they are 8-1 in conference play. Angelo State is 4-1 at home this season.

Madeline Stephens hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer as Angelo State extended its winning streak with a 61-59 victory over Eastern New Mexico at home on Saturday afternoon. Angelo State trailed the Greyhounds by 12 points with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Stephens finished with 16 points to lead the Rambelles.

Stephens scored a career-high 29 points against the Mustangs last season, and the 6-1 senior from Lubbock Monterey is averaging 13.3 points to lead the Rambelles in scoring this season.

Majik Esquivel is the second-leading scorer for Angelo State with 12.6 points per game, and she is the most prolific 3-point shooter in the conference with 103 attempts from beyond the arc. Esquivel is shooting 33 percent from long range (64 of 103), which is seventh in the LSC.

The Rambelles are the fourth-highest scoring team in the league with 68.9 points per game, and they have the seventh-best scoring defense in the LSC, holding opponents to 60.5 points per game.

Angelo State is the best rebounding team in the conference with 43.5 boards per game, including 15.2 offensive rebounds per contest. Stephens is second in the LSC with 10.1 rebounds per game, and Keniah Williams is the fifth-leading rebounder in the league with 8.8 boards per contest.

Williams and Stephens are both among the top-five shot blockers in the LSC. Williams is second in the league with 27 total blocks, and Stephens is fifth in the conference with 17 total blocks. Angelo State is second in the league with four blocks per game.

The Rambelles boast the second-best field goal percentage defense in the conference, keeping their opponents to 33.4 percent shooting from the field. Opponents are only shooting 25.4 percent from 3-point range, which is the second-best 3-point shooting percentage defense in the LSC.

Midwestern State continues its road trip on Saturday with a stop in Odessa, Texas, to face UT Permian Basin. Tipoff at the UTPB Gym Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
