CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Midwestern State plays its third straight away match on Thursday as the Mustangs visit Rogers State. Kickoff at Soldier Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Mere Escobar picked up where he left off last season, scoring two goals and adding two assists in the first two matches. The Mustangs defeated MSU Denver on opening day, 5-3, and settled for a 1-1 draw with Regis on Sunday in the Mile High City.
Escobar, a fifth-year senior from Austin, Texas, scored a brace and added an assist in the win over the Roadrunners last Friday. Escobar assisted on
Samuele Muroni's goal in the 63rd minute at Regis on Sunday.
The reigning D2CCA Ron Lenz NCAA Division II Player of the Year was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Escobar is the NCAA Division II active goal scoring leader and is sixth on MSU's all-time list with 46 goals. He moved into ninth place in the history of the program with 26 assists.
Eduardo Cerna also scored two goals at MSU Denver, and
Liam Pritchard had three assists for Midwestern State in the first two matches.
Max Gonzales has a goal and Cesar Rodriguez has an assist for the Mustangs.
Jakob Stone and
Daniel Robles each started a game at goalkeeper in Colorado. Stone registered a save against MSU Denver, and Robles made two stops against the Rangers on Sunday.
Midwestern State is facing the Hillcats for the 13th time in the history of the program. The Mustangs have never lost to Rogers State, boasting a 10-0-2 record in the all-time series.
A 2-2 draw with Rogers State in the home opener was the only blemish on the record during the regular season last year.
With the thermometer reading 108 degrees at kickoff, No. 7-ranked Midwestern State overcame two one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 draw. Escobar and
Jecsi Orellana-Espinal scored the goals for MSU. Erik Hjertsson and George Robinson found the back of the net for Rogers State.
The two sides also played a 1-1 draw in a 2017 match at Claremore.
In its last visit to Soldier Field, Midwestern State shut out the Hillcats, 2-0, as goalkeeper
Adam Braman made five saves to post the clean sheet on a damp night in 2022.
Escobar sent a well-placed cross to the back post, and
Jack Larkin scored with a header in the third minute. Sulahmana Bah scored off a corner kick in the 30th minute for the Mustangs.
Rogers State is 0-1-1 entering this year's confrontation with MSU. The Hillcats opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Maryville and fell to McKendree in the home opener on Saturday, 4-2.
Hjertsson, Alex Laing and Marcos Vasallo have scored goals for Rogers State. Hjertsson also has an assist.
Senior goalkeeper DeClan Viljoen has faced a total of 28 shots and recorded seven saves with a 1.50 goals against average through two matches.
Midwestern State makes its home debut on Sept. 19 when it tangles with Fort Hays State at 7 p.m. in the second match of the MSU Soccer Fall Festival. On Sept. 21, the Stang Gang squares off with Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m.
