ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Midwestern State makes it first-ever appearance in the national semifinals against six-time defending national champion Barry on Thursday morning at Salando Park. First serve is scheduled for 8 a.m. CDT.
The fifth-seeded Mustangs improved to 22-4 with a thrilling 4-3 victory over fourth-seeded Wingate in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night.
Sofia Giraldo clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4 win over Fernanda Castillo at No. 4 singles.
Barry has won the national championship eight times since 2014, including the last six, and is the No. 1 seed in the national tournament. Barry is 22-4 and finished 7-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Buccaneers won a South Regional title with a 4-0 win over Tuskegee and a 4-1 triumph over No. 5-ranked Embry Riddle.
Barry has not dropped a dual-match point in its first two matches at the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. Barry breezed past Tuskegee, 4-0, and did not lose a set in a dual that only last one hour and 12 minutes.
In the quarterfinals, Barry defeated 15th-seeded Nebraska-Kearney for the second time this season, earning a 4-0 win over the Lopers. Barry also defeated Nebraska-Kearney in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Championship.
Midwestern State is meeting Barry for the third time in the history of the program. The Buccaneers won the two previous encounters without dropping a set.
In 2013, Barry defeated the Mustangs, 5-0, in the round of 16 at the national tournament in Surprise, Arizona.
In 2005, the two schools met in Altamonte Springs, and the Buccaneers prevailed, 5-0, in the round of 16.
Midwestern State is facing a team currently ranked in the top-50 for the 18th time this season, and the Mustangs own a 13-4 record in those matchups, including wins over No. 37-ranked Queens College and No. 7-ranked Wingate in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship.
Jessica Binzari, ranked No. 14 among NCAA Division II singles players, had a nine-match winning streak in singles snapped with a 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 loss to 43rd-ranked Eva Siska of Wingate. Binzari is 14-9 this season with five losses to nationally ranked opponents. During her winning streak, the junior from Romania posted wins over 11th-ranked Muskan Gupta of UT Tyler and No. 16-ranked Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron. Binzari defeated Eva Rivoal of Queens College, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 16.
Anda Ghinga, also a junior from Romania, has won her first two singles matches at the national tournament. Ghinga, ranked No. 31 in the nation, scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Maja Makal of Queens College at No. 2 singles, and she followed that up with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory over No. 35-ranked Chloe Ksomrlj of Wingate. The Marie Morgan Award winner opened her campaign with 12 straight wins, and she won eight consecutive matches at No. 2 singles after suffering her first loss of the season. Ghinga has a 23-2 record this season and boasts a 6-1 record against nationally ranked opponents. Ghinga has 14 wins this season where she has dropped four or fewer games.
Hannah Yip, ranked No. 41 in the nation, has extended her winning streak in singles to 13 straight matches with two more wins at the national tournament. She breezed past Caroline Hany-Fawzy of Queens College, 6-3, 6-1, and then earned a comprehensive 6-2, 6-0 victory over Suzuka Sambyakugari of Wingate, keeping the Mustangs undefeated at No. 3 singles this season with a 24-0 record. The junior from Malaysia has won 15 matches in straight sets this year.
Giraldo, a freshman from Colombia, is 13-7 overall this season and boasts an 11-7 record at No. 4 singles. Giraldo had the dramatic win over Castillo in steamy conditions on Tuesday night, and she also clinched the 4-1 victory over Dallas Baptist in the South Central Regional at MSU Tennis Center on May 10 with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win over Isabella Rios.
Skylar Minns has two straight-set victories in the national tournament at No. 5 singles for the Mustangs. The senior from Port Aransas, Texas, clinched the round-of-16 victory over Queens College with 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Sara Berggren, and she gave MSU a 3-1 lead over Wingate by defeating Claudia Vallejos, 6-4, 6-4. Minns has won 11 of her last 13 completed matches and has played No. 5 singles in each of the last seven dual matches. Minns is 12-5 at No. 5 singles for the season.
Sydney Williams has a 12-3 record in singles this season with eight wins coming in the No. 6 position. The junior from Austin, Texas, went through conference play with a 9-0 mark.

Sarah Mazaraki clinched the doubles against Queens College with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles on Monday. The duo gave MSU an early advantage in doubles against Wingate with a 6-2 win over Mariia Bobrovska and Annika Hakovirta. Williams and Mazaraki have won eight of 10 matches played at No. 3 doubles this season and were 5-0 during the conference campaign.
Midwestern State has earned the doubles point in 15 of 26 dual matches this season, and the Mustangs are 14-0 in duals after claiming the doubles point. MSU has also won eight dual matches when dropping the doubles point, including its win over Wingate on Tuesday night.
Binzari and Ghinga, ranked No. 21 in doubles, won their match against the 46th-ranked pairing of Maja Makal and Sara Berggren of Queens College, 6-0, but suffered a 6-3 loss to Suzuka Sambyakugari and Eva Siska of Wingate in the quarterfinal dual, ending a five-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles.
Yip has been the consistent presence at No. 2 doubles for the Mustangs this season, playing with three different partners. Yip is 15-7 in her doubles matches, boasting a 6-2 record with Mazaraki and winning eight of 12 matches when paired with
Shreya Chakraborty. Yip has played alongside Giraldo in the two duals at the national tournament. Their match against Queens was unfinished, and they lost a tiebreak to Chloe Kosmrlj and Daniela Kotara of Wingate, 7-6 (3).
Barry has a 50-20 record overall in doubles this season, and the Buccaneers have dropped the doubles point in seven dual matches this season. Barry has won the doubles point in 10 of their last 11 dual matches, including wins over St. Thomas Aquinas and Nebraska-Kearney in the national tournament.
Viktoriia Dema and Dinara Alloiarova are ranked No. 34 in the nation among NCAA Division II pairings, and the duo has a 19-4 record this season. They have played No. 1 singles in the last seven dual matches for the Buccaneers and are 6-2 in the No. 1 position. Dema and Alloirova posted a 13-2 record at No. 2 doubles this season.
Barry is 104-27 in singles matches this season with a combined 42-4 record at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Clara Versier, ranked No. 70 in the nation, has played the No. 6 position in the last three dual matches, scoring straight-set victories over Kateryna Kryuchkova of St. Thomas Aquinas and Masha Hatouka of Nebraska-Kearney. The senior from France is 17-0 this season with five appearances at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively, and she is 7-0 at No. 6 singles.
Angela Leweurs, a junior from France, is 15-1 this season with 14 wins coming in the No. 5 position, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tanya Midzi of Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday. Leweurs has played No. 5 singles in the last 12 duals for the Buccaneers.
Alloiarova, a transfer from Kansas State, has a nine-match winning streak at No. 4 singles with a 15-6 overall record. Three of her losses came in the No. 2 spot during the first half of the season. The junior from Russia posted a 5-0 record at No. 3 singles and is 9-3 in No. 4 position.
Five different players have led the Buccaneers to a 16-2 record at No. 3 singles. Ailen Crespo, a freshman from Argentina, has played in that spot during the national tournament but has not completed a match.
Dema, a sophomore from Kyiv, Ukraine, has a 10-match winning streak in singles, and the 20th-ranked singles player in the nation has posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Amanda Kadiri of St. Thomas Aquinas and a 7-5, 6-0 win over Narindra Ranaivo of Nebraska-Kearney in the No. 2 position at the national tournament.
Alina Michalitsch is ranked No. 38 in the nation and has made eight consecutive appearances at No. 1 singles for Barry. Michalitsch has a 14-5 record overall with a 7-2 mark in the No. 1 spot. The freshman from Austria was 6-2 at No. 2 singles and split a pair of matches in the No. 3 position.
The winner advances to the championship match on Friday afternoon to face either North Georgia or Nova Southeastern.
