ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Midwestern State makes its ninth appearance in the NCAA Division II Round of 16, and the No. 5-seeded Mustangs tangle with 12th-seeded Queens College at Salando Park Tennis Center on Monday morning at 9 a.m. EDT.
Midwestern State, ranked No. 8 in the ITA National Rankings, was undefeated in the Lone Star Conference during the regular season and avenged its loss to Dallas Baptist in the semifinals of the LSC Women's Tennis Championship by ousting DBU, 4-1, in the South Central Regional at MSU Tennis Center last week.
The Mustangs are facing Queens College for the first time in the history of the program and are seeking a third appearance in the national quarterfinals.
The winner of the dual match advances to play either Wingate or Angelo State on Tuesday afternoon.
Midwestern State (20-4) reached 20 wins for the eighth time in program history and for the first time since going 21-7 in 2019, which was the last time MSU appeared in the Round of 16.
Queens (14-4) is making its ninth appearance in the Round of 16 but its first since 2019.
The Knights are ranked No. 37 in the ITA National Rankings and were the No. 1 seed in the NCAA East Region. Queens advanced to the Round of 16 with a 4-0 victory over Adelphi at the Queens College Indoor Tennis Bubble.
Midwestern State is facing a team currently ranked in the top-50 for the 16th time this season, and the Mustangs own an 11-4 record in those matchups.
Jessica Binzari, ranked No. 14 among NCAA Division II singles players, has reeled off eight consecutive victories at No. 1 singles for MSU, including wins over 11th-ranked Muskan Gupta of UT Tyler and No. 16-ranked Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron. The junior from Romania defeated Caroline Hudson of Dallas Baptist in the South Central Regional, 6-1, 6-3.
Anda Ghinga, a junior from Romania, opened her campaign with 12 straight wins, and she won eight consecutive matches at No. 2 singles after suffering her first loss of the season. Ghinga has a 21-2 record this season and boasts a 5-1 record against nationally ranked opponents.
The Mustangs are 22-0 this season at No. 3 singles. Ghinga won all 10 of her matches in the No. 3 position, and
Hannah Yip is 10-0 at No. 3 singles. Yip, a junior from Malaysia, arrives in Florida with an 11-match winning streak in singles, and nine of those wins have come in straight sets. Yip is 17-5 this season with two wins against nationally ranked opponents.
Sofia Giraldo clinched the victory over Dallas Baptist in the South Central Regional by defeating Isabella Rios, 7-5, 7-6 (7). The freshman from Colombia improved to 9-7 in the No. 4 position, and Giraldo is 12-7 this season, including two wins at No. 3 singles.
Skylar Minns, a senior from Aransas Pass, Texas, has won nine of her last 11 completed matches and has played No. 5 singles in each of the last five dual matches. Minns is 10-5 at No. 5 singles for the season, and she also won three of her five matches at No. 4 singles.
Sydney Williams ran through conference play undefeated in nine appearances and had a 12-match winning streak snapped with 1-6, 4-6 loss to Emily Buchanan in the LSC Women's Tennis Championship on April 26. The same two players met at No. 6 singles in the South Central Regional and split sets in an unfinished match.
Midwestern State has earned the doubles point in 13 of 24 dual matches this season.
The Romanian tandem of Binzari and Ghinga is ranked No. 21 in the nation and has a four-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles. The pairing improved to 14-7 this season with a 6-4 win over 20th-ranked Isabella Rios and Sofia Teran of Dallas Baptist in the South Central Regional at MSU Tennis Center on May 10.
Midwestern State is 15-7 at No. 2 doubles, led by Yip, who has a 15-6 record in doubles this season. Yip has played alongside
Sarah Mazaraki and
Shreya Chakraborty during the season.
Williams has racked up 12 of 13 wins at No. 3 doubles for the Mustangs. The junior from Austin, Texas has won six matches with Giraldo and six with Mazaraki this season. Williams was 8-2 in doubles during the conference campaign, including a 5-0 record with Mazaraki in the No. 3 position.
Queens won their two matches against nationally ranked opponents this season and was 5-0 in the East Coast Conference, winning 32 of a possible 35 dual-match points.
The Knights are led by 45th-year head coach Alan Nagel, who has won more than 77 percent of his dual matches as the head coach with a career record of 639-188.
