WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State extended its winning streak to four games as senior shortstop
Camile Nunez went 3-for-3 and hit her second home run of the series in a 3-1 victory over Western New Mexico at Mustangs Park on Sunday afternoon.
Midwestern State took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Paige Gallegos reached on a fielder's choice and stole second with two outs in the inning. Nunez delivered a single that was booted by Xitlali Trejo in left field allowing Gallegos to score on the play.
Ramona Fossum hit a lead-off single in the fourth inning for WNMU and advanced to second when Kennedy Jarrard was hit by a pitch. Adlai Alvidrez drove home the only run of the game for the Western Mustangs with a base hit up the middle, allowing Fossum to score.
Megan Ayala led off the bottom of the fourth inning for MSU with a single to right field. Meagan Shannon dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Ayala into scoring position. Ayala came home on a throwing error by third baseman Laryssa Morales, giving Midwestern State a 2-1 lead.
Kennedy Cameron earned the win for the MSU Mustangs and improved to 2-7 for the season. Cameron allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts and threw 41 of 62 pitches for strikes.
Shyanne Florence, who got her first win with a great relief performance on Saturday, picked up her first save of the season as she worked three innings and allowed just one hit without a walk and struck out two.
Nunez provided MSU with insurance in the sixth inning as she launched her second home run in as many days over the centerfield fence. The transfer from Texas A&M-Commerce has two homers and eight RBIs this season.
Allie Monroe was 2-for-3 with two base hits on Sunday and finished the series 5-for-9 with two doubles and a home run. Nunez was 5-for-8 in the three-game set with two home runs and two stolen bases.
Midwestern State improved to 10-29 overall with an 8-22 conference record, while Western New Mexico suffered its 17th-straight loss and fell to 7-30. WNMU is 4-26 against LSC opponents this season.
Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park for a doubleheader with Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The series with the Javelinas will wrap up on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
