No. 3-ranked Mustangs win battle in The Basin, 6-1

MIDLAND, Texas -- No. 3-ranked Midwestern State earned a 6-1 victory over UT Permian Basin at the Bush Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon and extended its dual-match winning streak to seven.

The Mustangs are 14-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play, winning for the sixth time in seven dual matches as the visiting team.

Midwestern State has taken 18 of a possible 21 dual-match points in its last three outings, and the Mustangs enjoyed another dominant performance against the Falcons, who fell to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in the Lone Star Conference.

After losing the doubles point at Western New Mexico on Friday, MSU rebounded by winning all three doubles matches at UTPB.

Hannah Yip and Shreya Chakraborty posted a 6-2 victory over Tuva Asplund and Lisa Guitton for their fourth win in five matches at No. 2 doubles.

Sarah Mazaraki teamed with Sydney Williams for the first time this season, and the tandem prevailed at No. 3 doubles, defeating Paige Bott and Teodora Vrucan, 6-3. Mazaraki improved to 8-2 in doubles. Williams played with her fourth partner this season and has won four of her last five doubles matches.

Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga, ranked No. 32 in the nation, won a tussle with Mattea Bowe and Brooke Runyan and improved to 10-5 with a 7-6 (8) victory at No. 1 doubles.

Ghinga, ranked No. 42 in singles, cruised past Guitton at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2, for her 15th win of the season. Ghinga has won three straight matches without dropping a set since suffering her only loss of the season.

Williams annihilated another opponent at No. 6 singles as Asplund became her eighth straight victim. Six of her wins have come in straight sets, and Williams only dropped seven games over four sets on the road trip as she improved to 8-1 for the season.

Binzari, ranked No. 43 in the nation, battled her way to a 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory over Runyan. The Romanian improved her singles record to 7-8 at No. 1 singles with four losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.

Bott earned the only point for the over-matched Falcons with a 7-5, 6-3 win over freshman Sofia Giraldo at No. 4 singles. Giraldo is 10-5 this season with a 3-2 record in LSC matches.

No. 31-ranked Hannah Yip won in straight sets for the fifth straight match and has reeled off six consecutive victories after dispatching Vrucan, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Yip is 12-5 for the season with a 5-1 conference record.
