ARLINGTON, Texas -- Top-seeded Midwestern State advanced to the semifinals of the LSC Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over eighth-seeded UT Permian Basin at Arlington Tennis Center on Thursday morning.
Senior
Skylar Minns clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over freshman Mattea Bowe at No. 5 singles. Minns has now won nine of her last 11 matches for the Mustangs, including a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bowe in their first matchup of the season.
Midwestern State took the doubles point as
Sydney Williams and
Sarah Mazaraki defeated Paige Bott and Teodora Vrucan, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles. Williams and Mazaraki remain undefeated for MSU with six consecutive victories. The streak began with a 6-3 win over Bott and Vrucan in Midland on April 6.
Hannah Yip and
Shreya Chakraborty gave the Mustangs an early advantage in doubles with a 6-3 triumph over Lisa Guitton and Tuva Asplund at No. 2 doubles. Yip and Chakraborty have won each of their last four matches and improved to 8-2 for the season. Yip and Chakraborty won their first meeting with the UTPB tandem, 6-2.
Anda Ghinga, who was selected as a First Team All-LSC Singles player on Wednesday night, wasted little time giving MSU a 2-0 lead in the dual match. Ghinga improved to 20-1 and extended her winning streak to 16 consecutive sets as she dismantled Guitton at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Ghinga defeated Guitton earlier this year in a dual match, 6-2, 6-2.
Jessica Binzari, the LSC Newcomer of the Year, also won her rematch as she prevailed 6-2, 6-3 against Brooke Runyan, who lost a 6-4, 7-6 (8) decision to Binzari 19 days earlier. Binzari has a seven-match winning streak at No. 1 singles.
Midwestern State meets Dallas Baptist in the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Arlington Tennis Center.
The fourth-seeded Patriots won their quarterfinal dual match over St. Mary's, 4-1.
Midwestern State won the first meeting with the Patriots, 5-2, at MSU Tennis Center on April 12. The Patriots won the doubles point as the First Team All-LSC Doubles pairing of Isabella Rios and Sofia Teran pulled out a 7-6 (5) win over Binzari and Ghinga at No. 1 doubles. Binzari and Ghinga received All-LSC Second Team honors.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with DBU, 12-2, but the Patriots earned a 5-2 victory at Arlington Tennis Center in a regular season dual match last year. The Mustangs only other loss to DBU came in 2012, when the Patriots scored a 5-4 victory at MSU Tennis Center.
Dallas Baptist is led by Leonie Schondelmaier, a sophomore from Germany, who was 16-5 during the regular season and is ranked No. 46 in the nation. Schondelmaier was chosen for the All-LSC Second Team Singles. Ghinga defeated Schondelmaier in their clash two weeks ago, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Emily Buchanan, an All-LSC Honorable Mention Singles, has been a stalwart for the Patriots and finished with a 16-4 record in dual matches during the regular season. Buchanan was 10-4 at No. 6 singles, where she played when DBU visited MSU earlier this month. Buchanan was beaten by
Micaela McSpadden, 6-3, 6-4.
Dallas Baptist excels in doubles with a 61-13 record overall during the regular season. The Patriots were 22-8 in doubles matches against conference foes and only dropped the doubles point twice in LSC duals.
