MSU into semifinals with 4-0 win over WNMU

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Top-seeded Midwestern State advanced to the semifinals of the LSC Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win over Western New Mexico at Arlington Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Philip Kamara clinched the dual-match victory for the MSU Mustangs with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Orellano at No. 5 singles. Kamara rebounded from back-to-back losses at Arkansas-Fort Smith and Cameron to win for the 11th time this year. Kamara is 6-3 in the No. 5 position. Orellano fell to Kamara for the second time this year. In their regular season match, Kamara prevailed, 6-4, 6-2.

The No. 3-ranked doubles team of Luis Diaz Argente and Stephen Slocombe secured the doubles point with their seventh consecutive victory at No. 1 doubles. The duo was named All-LSC First Team Doubles on Wednesday and defeated Alexandre Frigout and Brendan Lock, 6-4. Diaz and Slocombe won the matchup in Silver City, New Mexico, earlier this month, 6-1.

Germano Setti and Killian Guillou gave the Mustangs a leg up in doubles with a 6-1 victory over Orellano and Javier Romero at No. 2 doubles. Setti and Guillou have won eight of their last nine matches, including a 6-2 win over Orellano and Romero during the regular season.

Diaz, an All-LSC First Team Singles player, gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Romero at No. 1 singles. The last five victories for Diaz have been in straight sets, and the senior from Spain has won eight of his last 10 matches at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs. When the two players met on April 5, Diaz won the first set in a tiebreak and clinched the 7-0 victory for MSU with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 triumph.

Killian Guillou won a set at love for the first time this season and breezed past Lock, 6-0, 6-3. The sophomore from France has won three of his last four matches at No. 4 singles. Guillou needed three sets to beat Lock in Silver City, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Midwestern State faces No. 4-seed Lubbock Christian in the semifinals at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Lubbock Christian eliminated Cameron in the quarterfinals when Mattia Ghedin won a third-set tiebreak over Guilherme Cruz at No. 3 singles to give the Chaparrals a 4-3 victory.

Midwestern State opened its conference campaign with a 5-2 victory over Lubbock Christian at MSU Tennis Center on March 20. Kamara clinched the win for the Stang Gang with 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Sabri Laphitz at No. 6 singles.

Midwestern State won the doubles point in the first meeting with a sweep of the three matches.

Slocombe and Diaz defeated Martins Abamu and Tristin Vigneron, 6-1. Guillou and Setti were 6-2 winners against Ghedin and Braden Tipton at No. 2 doubles. Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen defeated Herman Aguirre and Pablo Segura, 6-2.

Diaz handled Tristan Vigneron at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, and Setti was a three-set winner over Abamu at No. 2 singles. Slocombe earned a decisive 6-0, 6-2 win over Aguirre at No. 4 singles.

Ghedin and and Segura won at No. 3 and No. 5 singles for the Chaparrals, who are 18-5 and finished with a 5-3 record during the conference campaign. LCU has won four consecutive dual matches and is 12-2 on neutral ground this year.

Midwestern State is 5-0 in the all-time series with the Chaparrals, but this will be the first meeting between the two schools in the LSC Men's Tennis Championship.
