ARLINGTON, Texas -- No. 6-ranked Midwestern State is the No. 1 seed in the LSC Women's Tennis Championship at Arlington Tennis Center, and the Mustangs face No. 8-seeded UT Permian Basin in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
Midwestern State is 18-3 overall with a 10-0 record in the Lone Star Conference after defeating Cameron on Sunday, 5-2.
Jessica Binzari, No. 16 in the ITA collegiate tennis rankings among NCAA Division II singles players, is 11-8 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs. Four of the losses for the junior from Romania have come against nationally ranked opponents. Binzari has a six-match winning streak after defeating No. 18-ranked Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Anda Ghinga, who is ranked No. 26 in singles, has a 19-1 record this season. The junior from Romania has a seven-match winning streak at No. 2 singles and is 9-1 against LSC opponents this season.
No. 40-ranked
Hannah Yip has won her last 10 singles matches for the Mustangs after defeating Kateryna Rudenko of Cameron, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Yip was forced into a decisive third set for the first time in nine matches. Yip is 5-0 in three-set encounters this season. The lefty from Malaysia is 16-5 in singles and 9-1 against conference opponents.
Freshman
Sofia Giraldo returned to the line-up after sitting out two duals with an injury and beat Antonietta Bocache of UAFS at No. 4 singles on Friday, 6-2. 6-0. The Colombian is 11-6 in singles with nine wins coming in the No. 4 position but is coming off a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Anastasia Uspenskaia of Cameron.
Skylar Minns, a senior from Aransas Pass, Texas, suffered a loss in straight sets for the first time since a 6-1, 6-4 setback to Eryka Kruk of Flagler on March 15. Lea Manga of Cameron earned a 6-0, 7-6 (1) victory over Minns at No. 5 singles. Minns finished the regular season with an 8-2 record in the LSC, and she is 12-7 overall this season.
Sydney Williams has a 12-match winning streak in singles after defeating Martyna Jankowska of Cameron at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Williams lost a three-set match to Zuzanna Krygier of Findlay on Feb. 28th but has not tasted defeat on a singles court since that non-conference clash. Eight of those victories have come in straight sets.
Midwestern State has won the doubles point in seven of its last nine duals and has taken the doubles point 11 times overall this season. The Mustangs are 21-6 in their last 27 doubles matches. Four different pairings have propelled MSU to a 14-5 record at No. 2 doubles, led by Yip who is 13-4 in the No. 2 spot, working alongside
Sarah Mazaraki and
Shreya Chakraborty.
Ghinga and Binzari are a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles and are ranked No. 29 in the nation among NCAA Division II doubles teams. The Romanian duo has faced nationally ranked pairings eight times this season and is 12-7 overall.
Williams has won nine of her last 11 doubles matches in the No. 3 position. Four of those victories have been with Giraldo, but Mazaraki teamed with Williams for victories in the last five duals.
UT Permian Basin finished the regular season with an 8-15 record and was 3-7 in the LSC. The Falcons have only earned three points in their last five dual matches, including a 6-1 loss to Angelo State in the regular season finale at Bush Tennis Center in Midland.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with UTPB, 11-1, including a 6-1 victory at Midland on April 6. MSU won all three doubles matches. Binzari defeated Brooke Runyan at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (8). Ghinga handled Lisa Guitton at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Yip enjoyed a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Teodora Vrucan at No. 3 singles. Minns beat Mattea Bowe at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Williams whipped Tuva Asplund at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Paige Bott earned the only point for the Falcons with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Giraldo.
The winner of Thursday's match advances to the semifinals and faces either Dallas Baptist or St. Mary's on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
