Midwestern State ranked No. 19 entering postseason

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State is the No. 1 seed in the Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship, but the Mustangs fell five spots in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings to No. 19 following a 5-2 loss to Cameron in the regular season finale.

The Mustangs are 12-8 overall with a 7-1 record in the Lone Star Conference. Seven of the eight losses this season were against nationally ranked opponents, including five in the top-12 of the latest rankings.

Midwestern State has posted victories over No. 17-ranked Hawaii Pacific, No. 22-ranked UT Tyler, No. 23-ranked Auburn Montgomery, No. 31-ranked UT Permian Basin, and No. 40-ranked Lubbock Christian.

Seven losses have come against No. 2-ranked Flagler, No. 4-ranked West Florida, No. 5-ranked Rollins, No. 9-ranked Washburn, No. 13-ranked Embry-Riddle, No. 20-ranked McKendree and No. 29-ranked Ouachita Baptist.

Midwestern State is the highest ranked of the four teams from the LSC ranked in the top 50.

Luis Diaz Argente has won seven of his last nine singles matches and is ranked No. 38 among NCAA Division II singles players. Diaz, who is 10-7 in dual matches this season, earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 17 Joaquin Bianchi of UT Tyler earlier this month. Diaz also defeated No. 26-ranked Sebastian Pjontek of Washburn last month, 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2, and No. 33 Robin Sanz of Hawaii Pacific, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). One of his losses came against No. 16-ranked Jacopo Denitto of Flagler.

Germano Setti is No. 61 in the singles rankings. Setti defeated No. 45-ranked Martins Abamu of Lubbock Christian, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the conference opener on March 20. The sophomore from Brazil has faced eight ranked opponents this season, including No. 7-ranked Baptiste Mercier of Flagler. Setti has posted an 11-9 record for MSU this season and has played No. 1 singles in eight dual matches.

Diaz and Stephen Slocombe are the No. 3-ranked doubles pairings in NCAA Division II. The duo is 13-4 at No. 1 doubles for MSU this season with a 4-2 record against nationally ranked tandems, including a 6-2 win over No. 38-ranked Martin Hlavacek and Alexandre Post of Cameron. Earlier this season, the MSU duo posted a 6-2 win over No. 9-ranked Fernando Docters and Ramon Strassmann of Ouachita Baptist.
