Mustangs can clinch No. 1 seed in LSC Tournament with win at Cameron

LAWTON, Oklahoma -- No. 4-ranked Midwestern State can finish the regular season with 11 consecutive wins and a 10-0 record in the Lone Star Conference. A win over Cameron at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon will give the Mustangs the No. 1 seed in the upcoming LSC Women's Tennis Championship. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Midwestern State is 17-3 overall with a 9-0 record in the Lone Star Conference after defeating Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday, 7-0.

Jessica Binzari, No. 24 in the ITA collegiate tennis rankings among NCAA Division II singles players, is 10-8 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs. Four of the losses for the junior from Romania have come against nationally ranked opponents. Binzari has a five-match winning streak and was named the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

Anda Ghinga, who is ranked No. 25 in singles, has an 18-1 record this season. The junior from Romania has a six-match winning streak at No. 2 singles and is 8-1 against LSC opponents this season.

No. 38-ranked Hannah Yip has won her last nine singles matches for the Mustangs and has not dropped a set in any of her last eight outings on the singles court. Yip has a 2-1 record against nationally ranked opponents this season. The left-handed junior from Malaysia is 14-5 in dual matches after defeating Camila Romero of UAFS, 6-1, 6-4.

Freshman Sofia Giraldo returned to the line-up after sitting out last week with an injury and beat Antonietta Bocache of UAFS at No. 4 singles on Friday, 6-2. 6-0. The Colombian improved to 11-5 in singles with nine wins coming in the No. 4 position

Senior Skylar Minns is 8-1 against conference opponents and has only lost once since returning from the Spring Break road trip. The senior from Aransas Pass, Texas, is 12-6 overall and her last four victories have come in straight sets.

Sydney Williams has an 11-match winning streak in singles after defeating Isabella Sorrano of UAFS at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Williams is 11-1 in singles for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State has won the doubles point in six of its last eight duals and has taken the doubles point 10 times overall this season. The Mustangs are 18-6 in their last 24 doubles matches. Four different pairings have propelled MSU to a 13-5 record at No. 2 doubles, led by Yip who is 12-4 in the No. 2 spot, working alongside Sarah Mazaraki and Shreya Chakraborty.

Ghinga and Binzari are a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles and are ranked No. 31 in the nation among NCAA Division II doubles teams. The Romanian duo has faced nationally ranked pairings seven times this season and is 11-7 overall.

Williams has won eight of her last 10 doubles matches in the No. 3 position. Four of those victories have been with Giraldo, but Mazaraki teamed with Williams for victories in the last four duals.

Cameron is ranked No. 22 in the nation with a 12-6 overall record and improved to 8-1 in the LSC with a 5-2 win over visiting Lubbock Christian on Friday. The Aggies have reeled off nine consecutive wins since suffering a 4-3 loss at Angelo State on March 22.

Midwestern State is 28-30-1 in its all-time series with the Aggies, who won the last meeting, 4-1. The two schools squared off in a South Central Regional dual match at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex last year, and the top-seeded Aggies eliminated fourth-seeded Midwestern State from the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. MSU is 13-16 all-time when visiting Cameron.

Vasilisa Polunova is ranked No. 16 in the nation and is coming off a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 26 Andrea De Bernardo of Lubbock Christian. Polunova is 10-6 at No. 1 singles for the Aggies and 6-2 against conference opponents.

Jenna Goessel is No. 69 in the national rankings, and she earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michelle Trochez of Lubbock Christian. The sophomore from Germany is 13-3 and 6-2 against conference opponents. Goessel has a three-match winning streak in singles.

Cameron has won the doubles point in eight of 17 dual matches this season, including five points in eight conference duals.

Polunova is 9-7 at No. 1 doubles playing alongside Antastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawronska.

Goessel and Kateryna Rudenko are 9-6 at No. 2 doubles.

Cameron is 25-23 in doubles matches overall with a 16-11 record in doubles matches against conference foes.

The Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Championship is scheduled to be played April 25-27 at Arlington Tennis Center.
