AUSTIN -- St. Edward's plated five runs in the second inning to finish off a sweep of Midwestern State with a 5-1 win the finale Saturday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field.
SEU senior Cadie Belle Currie allowed one unearned run on four hits and recorded six strikeouts to win her third straight decision to help the Hilltoppers to their sixth consecutive win to improve to 17-32 on the season and 15-24 in Lone Star Conference play.
Sophomore first baseman Ella Hutzler keyed the five-run second inning with a two-run double to right field, while freshman Alea DeSerrano added a run-scoring single as the Hilltoppers jumped out to a 5-1 lead.
Midwestern State took the early lead in the first inning after
Allie Monroe reached on a two-out single to center field. The sophomore from Lawton stole second and scored after St. Edward's catcher Sloane Hill's throw glanced off of her helmet and rolled to the fence.
Monroe,
Camile Nunez, and
Megan Ayala each extended hitting streak to four games with singles, while
Avery Rohlman notched her first collegiate hit with a single up the middle to lead off the fifth inning.
Senior
Kennedy Cameron limited the Hilltoppers to two hits over 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the remainder of the game.
Midwestern State closes the season with a three-game series against Texas A&M International next weekend at Mustangs Park. The Mustangs and Dustdevils play a twin bill Friday at 1 and 3 p.m. before facing off in a single game Saturday at noon.
