Nunez swings hot bat in doubleheader at St. Edward's

AUSTIN, Texas -- Camile Nunez had four hits in the doubleheader, including a triple, while Megan Ayala and Mikey Dominguez each drove in three runs during the twin bill at Diane Daniels Field, but St. Edward's swept the Mustangs on Friday afternoon, 8-7 and 5-1.

GAME 1 | St. Edward's 8, Midwestern State 7

Midwestern State overcame a 6-1 deficit and tied St. Edward's in the fourth inning, 7-7, but the Hilltoppers scored the winning run in the sixth inning to defeat the Mustangs.

Ayala had two RBIs, and Mikey Dominguez drove in three runs for Midwestern State. Kayla Bryant was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice, while Nunez was 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Mustangs.

Ayala drove home Bryant with a sacrifice fly to shallow right field in the first inning, but St. Edward's scored twice in the first and added four more runs in the second inning as Jerzie Pelham and Katie Dillon both hit RBI doubles for the Hilltoppers.

Allie Monroe singled to lead off the third inning, and the Mustangs began to rally. After Addison Lindemann drew a walk, and Nunez reached on a bunt single, Ayala and Dominguez drove in two runs for the Mustangs.

After St. Edward's pushed its lead to 7-3 with a run in the bottom of the third, Paige Gallegos started a four-run uprising for MSU in the fourth inning. Gallegos led off with a single and advanced to second base on an error. Breanna Dominguez and Gallegos pulled off a double steal, and they both scored on Kayla Bryant's base hit.

Two more runs scored in the fourth after Nunez was hit by a pitch and Ayala singled to left field. Mikey Dominguez doubled up the middle, scoring Nunez and Kayla Bryant as MSU pulled even with the Hilltoppers, 7-7.

Pelham led off the sixth inning with a double and scored on Arianna Vidales' sacrifice fly as St. Edward's reclaimed the lead and held on for an 8-7 victory.

In the seventh inning, Mikey Dominguez was hit by a pitch, but winning pitcher Cadie Belle Currie (3-7) struck out the next three batters to end the game.

Lindemann started in the circle but only lasted 1 1/3 innings for the Mustangs. Shyanne Florence (1-3) worked 4 2/3 innings of relief for MSU, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

GAME 2 | St. Edward's 5, Midwestern State 1

Kennedy Cameron (3-8) threw her fourth complete game of the season, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks, but the Hilltoppers defeated the Mustangs, 5-1.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring after the first two batters were retired. Monroe reached on an infield single. Ayala drove home her 14th run of the season when she doubled to the gap in right-center field and Monroe scored.

Morris led off the second inning for the Hilltoppers with a double and scored on a Ryan Rangel base hit.

The game remained tied, 1-1, until St. Edward's scored four runs with a two-out rally in the sixth inning, capitalizing on two MSU errors in the frame.

Mikey Dominguez finished the game 2-for-3 and stole a base. Maegan Shannon hit her second double of the season, and Nunez hit her second triple of the campaign.

Midwestern State fell to 12-35 overall and 10-28 in the LSC. The Mustangs have been eliminated from the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.

St. Edward's extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 16-32 overall and 14-24 in the LSC.

Midwestern State returns to Diane Daniels Field on Saturday to complete the three-game series. The game time has been moved to 11 a.m. due to the threat of rain in the Austin area.
