Patriots visit No. 4-ranked Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 4-ranked Midwestern State looks to keep its conference record unblemished as Dallas Baptist and UT Tyler visit the Mustangs for dual matches on Friday and Saturday. Dallas Baptist will be at the MSU Tennis Center on Friday, and first serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. MSU welcomes UT Tyler to the campus on Saturday for a 10 a.m. dual match.

Midwestern State is 14-3 overall with a 6-0 record in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs are 7-0 in home duals this season. MSU is coming off a pair of road wins last week. The Mustangs overwhelmed Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin and won both dual matches, 6-1.

Jessica Binzari, No. 32 in the ITA collegiate tennis rankings among NCAA Division II singles players, is 7-8 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs. Four of the losses for the junior from Romania have come against nationally ranked opponents. Binzari has won four of her last six matches in straight sets.

Anda Ghinga, who is ranked No. 30 in singles, has a 15-1 record to start the season. The junior from Romania has a three-match winning streak at No. 2 singles and is 5-1 against LSC opponents this season, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lisa Guitton of UTPB last week.

No. 39-ranked Hannah Yip has won her last six singles matches for the Mustangs and has not dropped a set in any of her last five outings on the singles court. Yip has a 2-1 record against nationally ranked opponents this season. The left-handed junior from Malaysia is 12-5 in dual matches after defeating Teodora Vrucan of UTPB, 6-4, 6-2, in Midland last week.

Freshman Sofia Giraldo has started her collegiate career with a 10-5 record and is 5-1 at home this season. Giraldo is coming off a 5-7, 3-6 loss to Paige Bott at UT Permian Basin. In her last match at MSU Tennis Center, Giraldo defeated Milou Ter Morsche of Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-2, 6-3.

Senior Skylar Minns is 6-0 against conference opponents and has not lost a match since returning from the Spring Break road trip. Minns is 5-1 at home this season, and she earned two straight-set victories at WNMU and UTPB last week.

Sydney Williams has an eight-match winning streak in singles, including six victories in straight sets. The junior from Austin, Texas, dismantled Tuva Asplund of UTPB in her last match, 6-2, 6-1.

Midwestern State has won the doubles point in four of its last five duals and has taken the doubles point eight times overall this season. The Mustangs are 12-3 in their last 15 doubles matches. Four different pairings have propelled MSU to an 11-4 record at No. 2 doubles, led by Yip who is 10-3 in the No. 2 spot, working alongside Sarah Mazaraki and Shreya Chakraborty.

Ghinga and Binzari are a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles and are ranked No. 27 in the nation among NCAA Division II doubles teams. The Romanian duo has faced nationally ranked pairings six times this season and is 10-5 overall.

Williams has won five of her last seven doubles matches in the No. 3 position. Four of those victories have been with Giraldo, but Mazaraki teamed with Williams for a 6-3 victory over Bott and Vrucan at UTPB. Mazaraki is 8-2 in doubles matches for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Dallas Baptist, 11-2, but had a nine-dual winning streak snapped in the series as the Patriots upended the Mustangs in Arlington, Texas, last season, 5-2. Dallas Baptist swept the doubles last year and won all but the matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Dallas Baptist boasts a 17-3 overall record this season, and the Patriots are 4-1 in the LSC. DBU saw a 10-dual winning streak end with a 4-3 loss to Cameron last week. The Patriots won the doubles point against the Aggies and also earned points at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.

Emily Buchanan has a 10-match winning streak, playing primarily at No. 6 singles for the Patriots. Buchanan is also 5-1 in doubles this season.

Leonie Schondelmaier is 13-3 in dual matches and is coming off a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jenna Goessel of Cameron in the No. 2 singles match.

Caroline Hudson is 2-3 against conference opponents at No. 1 singles following a 0-6, 6-2, 3-6 loss to Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron last week.

Dallas Baptist has won the doubles point in each of its last 15 dual matches, and the Patriots have only dropped five doubles matches in that span. Southern Arkansas is the only team that has managed to win the doubles point against DBU this season.

Midwestern State is 6-0 in its head-to-head meetings with UT Tyler, including a 4-3 victory in Tyler last spring. The Patriots are making their third visit to MSU Tennis Center.

UT Tyler is 5-14 with a 2-4 conference record after a 7-0 loss at No. 20-ranked Lubbock Christian on Thursday.

Muskan Gupta, a senior from India, has been a dominant force at No. 1 singles for UT Tyler. Gupta has won nine of her last 11 matches. She is 4-2 in conference, and all four victories have been in straight sets, but Gupta lost to Anastas Khrustaleva of Lubbock Christian, 6-4, 4-6, 2-10.

The Patriots have lost the doubles point in each of their last four dual matches and are 1-11 in doubles matches in that span. UT Tyler is 17-36 overall in doubles this season.

Minns and Shreya Chakraborty are the two seniors on the women's team that will be recognized during Senior Day ceremonies on Saturday at MSU Tennis Center. .

The Mustangs wrap up the regular season with a road trip to face Arkansas-Fort Smith and Cameron on April 19 and 20.
