No. 3-ranked Mustangs earn impressive win over No. 19-ranked Angelo State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 3 Midwestern State withstood a challenge from No. 19-ranked Angelo State and remained undefeated in the Lone Star Conference with a 4-3 victory at MSU Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who are 6-0 at home this season, snapped the Rambelles' 11-dual match winning streak.

Midwestern State improved to 11-3 overall with a 3-0 conference record. Angelo State fell to 13-2 and 3-1 against LSC opponents.

"They've been top-20 for the last four or five years, but we're an extremely tough team, and we're going to keep putting ourselves in a position to win against anybody in the country," head coach Scott Linn said after Skylar Minns clinched the victory for the Mustangs.

Minns won a lengthy 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 battle over Ayda Guler at No. 5 singles and extended her winning streak to three matches. The senior from Aransas Pass, Texas, is 4-1 at home this season and 7-5 overall in singles matches.

Winning the doubles point to start the dual match was essential to the Mustangs' victory.

"We came out in doubles and finished really well," Linn said.

Hannah Yip and Shreya Chakraborty clinched the first point of the day with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles — just moments after Sofia Giraldo and Sydney Williams improved to 4-1 at home this season with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 position.

"Shreya did a tremendous job coming in and stepping in — hasn't played a whole lot —played with confidence, got after it and was awesome," Linn said.

Williams gave the Stang Gang a 2-0 lead over the Rambelles, storming past Ivet Stancheva, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. Williams recorded her fifth consecutive victory and has only dropped four games in her last six sets.

Hannah Yip, ranked No. 36 among NCAA Division II singles players, posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jessica Sue Li at No. 3 singles as the Mustangs established a 3-1 lead. Yip has a three-match winning streak and improved to 9-5 in singles this spring.

Letizia Corsini, ranked No. 14 in the nation, had to play her best tennis to defeat No. 47-ranked Jessica Binzari of MSU at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, giving the Rambelles their first point of the dual match. Corsini, a sophomore from Italy, improved to 13-0 for the season.

Giraldo, an MSU freshman from Colombia, raced out to a 6-0 first-set win over Christine Jevicky, who returned from a bathroom break to take the next two sets, 7-5, 6-3. Giraldo suffered her first home loss in five matches.

Anda Ghinga, ranked No. 25 in the nation, entered the day with a 12-match winning streak for Midwestern State and played nearly a three-hour match against Eva Schwartz of Angelo State at No. 2 singles. The senior from France outlasted Ghinga, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. One minute earlier, Minns clinched the victory for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State returns to MSU Tennis Center on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Kingsville (7-6, 1-3), which is coming off a 5-2 loss at Lubbock Christian on Friday.
