WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 3-ranked Midwestern State looks to remain undefeated in the Lone Star Conference as it hosts No. 19-ranked Angelo State for a dual match at MSU Tennis Center on Friday. First serve is scheduled for noon.
Midwestern State (10-3, 2-0) opened conference play with a 4-3 victory over Lubbock Christian at home last week before traveling to St. Mary's for a 6-1 triumph over the Rattlers. The Mustangs are coming off a 7-0 win over Colorado-State Pueblo in their final non-conference dual match and have won their last 12 singles matches.
MSU is facing a ranked opponent for the ninth time this season, and the Mustangs are 6-2 in the eight previous dual matches against teams appearing in the ITA College Tennis Rankings.
Jessica Binzari, No. 47 in the ITA collegiate tennis rankings among NCAA Division II singles players, is 5-6 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs and has posted back-to-back victories in straight sets. Two of the losses for the junior from Romania have come against nationally ranked opponents.
Anda Ghinga, who is ranked No. 25 in singles, has won 12 consecutive matches to start the season. The junior defeated No. 11-ranked Selina Wu of St. Mary's, 6-2, 6-3, for her second win over a nationally ranked opponent. Ghinga made her second appearance at No. 2 singles against the Rattlers. The Romanian is 10-0 at No. 3 singles this season. Ghiinga did not play a singles match against Colorado State-Pueblo on Tuesday.
Hannah Yip is 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents this season. Yip made her 11th appearance at No. 2 singles for the Mustangs on Tuesday and scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Valentina Brienza of Colorado State-Pueblo. The left-handed junior from Malaysia improved to 8-5 in dual matches this season, and she is 4-0 in three-set matches.
Freshman
Sofia Giraldo has started her collegiate career with a 9-3 record and has won seven of her last eight matches, including a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Mariangel Nunez of Colorado State-Pueblo. Giraldo has a three-match winning streak and is 4-0 in singles matches at MSU Tennis Center.
Skylar Minns has won back-to-back matches at No. 5 singles and improved to 6-5 overall this season with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Stela Sifuentes of St. Mary's. Minns has won two tiebreak sets this season, defeating Greta Zowels of No. 7-ranked West Alabama 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Midwestern State is 5-6 at No. 6 singles, but
Sydney Williams has won her last three singles matches in the No. 6 position. The junior from Austin, Texas, dispatched Janel Ospanova of St. Mary's, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Williams played in the No. 4 spot against the visiting Thunderwolves earlier this week and rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marta Garcia.
Midwestern State has won the doubles point in five duals this season, including a sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo as the Mustangs only dropped three games against the Thunderwolves in doubles.
Ghinga and Binzari are a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles and are ranked No. 50 in the nation among NCAA Division II doubles teams. The Romanian duo defeated Margot Aebischer and Mariangel Nunez of Colorado State-Pueblo, 6-1. Ghinga and Binzari have faced nationally ranked pairings four times this season and are 7-4 overall.
Yip and
Sarah Mazaraki had a five-match winning streak at No. 2 doubles snapped at St. Mary's after a close match with Paula Garrote and Alessia Terlizzi of St. Mary's, who prevailed, 7-6 (4), in San Antonio. Yip and Mazaraki are 7-2 as a tandem for the Stang Gang this season, including a 6-3 win over No. 36-ranked Andrea De Bernardo and Michelle Trochez of Lubbock Christian.
Yip played alongside
Shreya Chakraborty against Colorado State-Pueblo, and the duo prevailed, 6-2, in the No. 2 position. Chakraborty, a senior transfer from Bluefield State, also picked up her first singles victory as a Mustang with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Malaya Pendon at No. 5 singles.
Mazaraki played No. 6 singles against the Thunderwolves and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Yelena Travica.
Williams and Giraldo have helped solidify the No. 3 doubles position. The pairing is 4-5 overall but has posted wins in duals against No. 26-ranked Rollins and No. 19-ranked Lubbock Christian. The duo has won their last three matches at MSU Tennis Center.
Midwestern State is undefeated in dual matches at home this season with a 5-0 record, and is 1-1 when hosting the Rambelles. Angelo State has won the last four meetings with the Mustangs, including a 6-1 victory at ASU Tennis Complex last season. Yip scored a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over then-ranked No. 39 Letizia Cortez at No. 2 singles last spring. Angelo State has not visited the Mustangs since a 4-3 victory in 2021. The first meeting between the two schools was at MSU Tennis Center in 2018, and Midwestern State prevailed, 7-2.
Angelo State (13-1, 3-0) has won its last 11 dual matches and is coming off a 7-0 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Rambelles also defeated Cameron last week at ASU Tennis Complex, 4-3.
Corsini is undefeated this season with a 12-0 record in singles, and she is No. 14 in the ITA collegiate tennis rankings. Corsini and Ayda Guler are also 13-0 in doubles this season.
Corsini has played exclusively at No. 1 singles for the Rambelles and has won 10 of her matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Petra Csizmadia of UAFS. Corsini defeated Vasilisa Polunova of Cameron last week, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Corsini and Guler have played No. 2 doubles in all 14 dual matches this season and pasted Taylor Conway and Camila Romero of UAFS, 6-1, in their most recent match.
Corsini is the reigning LSC Player of the Week and has received the honor twice this season.
Avery Durham and Eva Schwartz play No. 1 doubles for the Rambelles, and the duo is ranked No. 28 in the nation among NCAA Division II pairings with an 11-3 record. Durham and Schwartz have won five consecutive matches since losing to Alessa Maier and Milou ter Morsche of Texas A&M-Kingsville on March 2.
Schwartz is 8-5 in singles with a 6-5 record in the No. 2 spot. Guler is 10-4 in singles matches with a 6-1 mark at the No. 5 position.
Christine Jevicky has an eight-match winning streak in singles and improved to 10-1 for Angelo State with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Martyna Jankowska of Cameron at No. 4 singles last week.
Jessica Li has won her last six matches at No. 3 singles in straight sets and is 10-3 in singles overall this year.
Mieke Van Deventer and Alexandra Vishnevskaya are 3-0 at No. 3 doubles in dual matches against conference opponents and 6-0 overall for the Rambelles this season.
Midwestern State welcomes Texas A&M-Kingsville to MSU Tennis Center for an LSC dual match on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
