Ghinga makes triumphant return, Binzari clinches in MSU debut at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. -- Midwestern State opened its season with an impressive victory at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday. Jessica Binzari clinched the 5-2 victory at No. 1 singles in her Midwestern State debut.

Binzari was paired with Anda Ghinga at No. 2 doubles, but their match went unfinished after the Savage Storm claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Ghinga, ranked No. 29 in the nation, made a triumphant return to dual-match play for the Mustangs. The Romanian sat out last season with a medical redshirt after two season as an All-Lone Star Conference performer in singles and doubles.

Ghinga breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Larissa Giraldi at No. 3 singles and pulled the Mustangs even with Southeastern.

Freshman Sofia Giraldo from Colombia played alongside Micaela McSpadden at No. 3 doubles, but Milana Voloshyn and Amishi Skukla scored a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Savage Storm.

Giraldo then played her first collegiate singles match in a regular season dual match and coasted to a victory over Sara Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-2.

Shukla rallied to defeat senior Shreya Chakraborty of India, who was making her first appearance for the Stang Gang after transferring from Bluefield State. Shukla's 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory tied the dual match, 2-2.

Skylar Minns improved her career record at MSU to 7-5 in three-set matches with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Voloshyn at No. 5 singles.

Binzari, who had 30 wins at No. 1 singles over the last two seasons at Coker, was locked in a hard-fought battle with Vanessa Nitu, but the left-handed junior secured the win for her new team with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 triumph on opening day.

Junior Hannah Yip prevailed in a marathon match at No. 2 singles, defeating Georgia Hosking, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9). Yip played nine three-set matches for the Mustangs last spring, and her only victory came against No. 39-ranked Letizia Corsini of Angelo State.

Junior Sydney Williams played alongside Chakraborty at No. 1 doubles in the season opener, and they fell to Gonzalez and Hosking, 6-4, to start the day.

Midwestern State is home on Wednesday to play Findlay (Ohio) at MSU Tennis Center, and the dual match begins at 2 p.m.
