Lady Chaps sweep doubleheader in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Lubbock Christian pitching limited the Midwestern State offense to seven hits over two games, and the Lady Chaps swept the doubleheader at Maner Park on Wednesday afternoon. Lubbock Christian won the first game, 3-0, and took the nightcap, 9-1, in six innings.

Game 1: Midwestern State 0, Lubbock Christian 3

Midwestern State loaded the bases in the seventh inning but was unable to break through against Teoni Lamb (2-1), who threw a complete game shutout for the Lady Chaps.

Junior first baseman Myranda Jimenez had her first multi-hit game for the Mustangs with a single in the fifth and a base hit up the middle in the seventh inning.

Senior shortstop Camile Nunez delivered a single in the third inning and was the only other Mustang to get a hit off Lamb.

Lubbock Christian scored an unearned run in the third inning. Hope Banales led off the inning with a single, and Ally Oyanguren reached on an error. Riley Flores came through with a two-out RBI single to give the Lady Chaps the lead.

Skylar Herrera hit a home run in the fourth inning, and a lead-off walk came around to score in the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Bailey Hughes hit a two-out single that brought home Cat Prisock with the final run of the game.

Kennedy Cameron (0-3) made her fourth start in the circle for the Mustangs and worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits with two walks and five strike outs.

Zoe Isom pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits with three walks.

Lamb struck out seven Mustangs and issued two walks. The junior from Australia threw 63 of her 97 pitches for strikes en route to the victory for the Lady Chaps.

Game 2: Midwestern State 1, Lubbock Christian 9

Sydney Gonzales, who had made six relief appearances this season, made her first start for the Mustangs but lasted just 1/3 of an inning. Gonzales hit the lead-off hitter and issued two walks before Banales drove in Flores with a fielder's choice. After a base hit for Baylea Myers, a passed ball and a walk, Addison Lindemann took over in the circle.

Lindemann struck out Hughes and got Amanda Valdiviezo to ground into a fielder's choice to retire the side.

Lubbock Christian held a 2-0 through three innings. Banales drove in three runs with an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning. Banales hit a 3-2 pitch into left field. The ball hit the turf with spin and skipped past Brianna Dominguez, allowing the Lady Chaps to take a 5-0 lead.

The Mustangs answered with a run in the fifth inning. Dominguez drew a one-out walk, and Kayla Bryant reached on an error. Starting pitcher Ashlinn Hamilton issued her second walk of the inning to Megan Ayala and was replaced in the circle by freshman Reese Farrar.

Facing MSU slugger Allie Monroe with the bases loaded, Farrar threw a wild pitch that allowed Dominguez to score. After Monroe walked, Farrar got Paige Gallegos to fly out to center field and struck out Nunez to end the Mustangs biggest threat of the game.

Lindemann, who threw a complete game against the Lady Chaps on Tuesday, gave up four runs on four hits in the sixth inning, and Herrera scored on a throwing error to end the game via the run-rule.

The freshman pitcher from Holliday, Texas, worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed six earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Gonzales (1-1) took the loss for the Mustangs.

Nunez finished the doubleheader 2-for-6 and was the only Mustang to get a hit in both games.

Hamilton (1-1) earned the win for the Lady Chaps, allowing one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings without a strikeout and walked just one batter.

Farrar walked a batter and struck out one in 1 2/3 innings to pick up her first save for Lubbock Christian.

Midwestern State falls to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play. Lubbock Christian is 5-5 overall and 4-2 against Lone Star Conference opponents.

Midwestern State is home on Friday to play a doubleheader against Cameron. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The three-game series will conclude on Sunday with a game at 1 p.m.
