Angelo State sweeps past Mustangs

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Angelo State finished off a three-game sweep of Midwestern State by taking both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 3-1 and 10-0 in five innings Friday afternoon at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles ran their winning streak to eight games to improve to 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference. Angelo State sent MSU to its fifth and sixth consecutive loss as the Mustangs dropped to 2-10 and 0-3.

The Mustangs struck first in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Chloe Bryant drilled a leadoff double down the left-field line, then came around to score when Paige Gallegos reached on a fielder's choice.

Freshman Addison Lindemann held Angelo State scoreless on one hit through the first five innings, but the Mustangs failed to capitalize on opportunities to take control of the game and stranded nine runners.

Angelo State loaded the bases with just one out on a pair of singles and a walk in the sixth inning before Carter Smith drove in a pair of runs on an infield single. Zoey De Baca followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to push the Rambelle lead to 3-0.

Angelo State Torrey Hogan came on to pitch 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts to earn the win, while Lindemann was saddled with loss to fall to 0-4. Lindemann surrendered three runs on just four hits.

Senior outfielder Ashton Dirner drove in five runs to spur Angelo State to a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings during the night cap.

Dirner lofted a two-run single to left to highlight a five-run first inning for the Rambelles, then had a bases loaded, bases clearing double down the left-field line to push ASU to another five-run frame in the fifth.

Cheyenne Floyd improved to 8-0 by allowing three hits in four scoreless innings.

Sophomore infielder Kayla Bryant paced the Mustangs' five-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Camile Nunez, Maegan Shannon, and Morgan Brown also had hits for the Mustangs.

Elizabeth Uhl (0-2) took the loss for MSU, allowing five runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Midwestern State out-hit the Rambelles -- 16-15 -- in the three-game set despite by being outscored, 16-1.

The Mustangs return to action with a three-game LSC series against Lubbock Christian next week at Maner Park in Lubbock. The teams play a single game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday before finishing the with a double on Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
