TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State looks to rebound from its 77-75 loss at Dallas Baptist as it visits UT Tyler on Friday night. Tipoff at Louis Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Mason Gibson hit 9-of-12 shots from the field with a pair of 3-pointers, while going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe on his way to 31 points at Dallas Baptist on Wednesday night. It was his second 30-point effort of the campaign and his fourth game with at least 20 points.
Gibson is second in the conference with 20.6 points per game and is shooting 47.7 percent from the field (51 of 107), and he is hitting 43.3 percent of his 3-point attempts (13 of 30). Gibson has taken the third-most shots in the LSC, and he is third in made field goals.
Sanders is the second -leading scorer for the Mustangs with 12 points per game and he is shooting 47.5 percent from the field (29 of 61), and the fifth-year senior has knocked down eight of his 18 attempts from 3-point range.
Jackson, who has come off the bench in each of the last five games, is accounting for 10.6 points a game and shooting 46.3 percent (19 of 41). The senior guard is 13 of 33 (.394) from beyond the arc.
Reggie Hill and
Will Shepherd are both among the top-six rebounders in the LSC. Hill is fourth in the league with 7.9 rebounds per game, and Shepherd is the sixth-leading rebounder in the conference with 6.9 boards per game.
Sanders continues to lead the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.33, which is the 31st-best ratio in the nation among NCAA Division II players. Sanders is third in the LSC with 4.3 assists per game.
Midwestern State has the second-best field goal percentage defense in the Lone Star Conference, holding opponents to 39.8 percent shooting, which is 24th among NCAA Division II programs.
The Mustangs are outscoring opponents, 77.6– 73.3, and shooting 45 percent from the field, including the third-best three-point shooting percentage in the LSC at 39.9 percent with the fourth most attempts from beyond the arc — 24 per game.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with UT Tyler, 5-4, and defeated the Patriots at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season, 99-78. Shepherd buried seven of his 10 shots including a campaign-best four 3-pointers to finish with 20 points for the Mustangs, who scored 34 points off 24 turnovers.
The Mustangs are 1-2 all-time at UT Tyler and have lost their last six conference road games, dating back to last season. The Mustangs only win at Patriot Center was a 59-44 victory in January of 2020.
The Patriots were 2-20 in conference play last season and suffered their 10th consecutive loss in LSC play on Wednesday night as Lubbock Christian prevailed, 59-51, in their conference opener.
The loss to the Chaparrals snapped a three-game winning streak for UT Tyler, which is 3-4overall this season.
The Patriots boast the third-best field goal percentage defense in the country among NCAA Divison II programs, holding opponents to 36.6 percent shooting from the field. UT Tyler is only allowing 61.6 points per game, which is the best scoring defense in the LSC and ninth in the nation.
Dontrell Hewlett, a 6-4 senior guard from Sacramento, Calif., is the leading scorer for UT Tyler with 14.4 points per game. Hudson Anderson, a 6-9 junior forward from Colorado Springs, is the leading rebounder with 5.8 boards per game.
Nikolas Gustavson has the fifth-best 3-point shooting percentage in NCAA Division II. The senior from Finland is 18 of 31 from beyond the arc (.581), and he is seventh in the conference with 2.57 3-pointers per game.
Midwestern State returns to action on Dec. 16 as the Mustangs travel to San Antonio for a non-conference tilt with St. Mary's. Tipoff at Bill Greehey Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
