DALLAS -- Midwestern State travels to the Metroplex for an early season showdown with No. 5-ranked Dallas Baptist at Burg Center on Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Midwestern State has a four-game winning streak and will play a game for the first time in 11 days after defeating St. Edward's, 63-62. MSU improved its overall record to 5-1 and its conference record to 2-0.
Jonathan Jackson led a balanced attack with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
Pierre Sanders scored 12 points and dished out six assists in the victory, while
Will Shepherd pitched in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Reggie Hill had six points and a team-leading 12 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State has the second-best field goal percentage defense in the Lone Star Conference, holding opponents to 39.5 percent shooting, which is 25th among NCAA Division II programs.
The Mustangs are outscoring opponents, 78.0 – 72.7, and shooting 44.9 percent from the field, including the third-best three-point shooting percentage in the LSC at 40.3 percent with the third most attempts from beyond the arc — 24.8 per game.
Mason Gibson is third in the conference with 18.8 points per game and is shooting 44.2 percent from the field (42 of 95), and he is hitting 40.7 percent of his 3-point attempts (11 of 27). Gibson has taken the third-most shots in the LSC, and he is fourth in made field goals.
Sanders is the second -leading scorer for the Mustangs with 13 points per game and he is shooting 54 percent from the field (27 of 50), and the fifth-year senior has knocked down eight of his 16 attempts from 3-point range.
Jackson, who has come off the bench in each of the last four games, is accounting for 12 points a game and shooting 48.6 percent (18 of 37). The senior guard is 12 of 29 (.414) from beyond the arc.
Hill and Shepherd are both among the top-six rebounders in the LSC with more than seven boards a game. Hill is fifth in the league with 7.5 rebounds per game, and Shepherd is the sixth-leading rebounder in the conference with 7.2 boards per game.
Sanders continues to lead the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.83, which is the 12th-best ratio in the nation among NCAA Division II players. Sanders is second in the LSC with 4.8 assists per game.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Dallas Baptist, 29-26, but has lost eight of the last 10 meetings, including an 87-65 loss at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season.
Cameron Kahn had 19 points and 13 rebounds in the DBU victory last season, and Kahn is the reigning LSC Player of the Week.
Kahn averaged 19 points, six rebounds and 2.5 steals in wins over Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene as DBU improved to 8-1 overall.
The fifth-year senior from Sulphur Springs, Texas, is averaging 16.6 points and a team-leading 6.1 rebounds per game for the Patriots. Kahn shoots 50.8 percent from the field
Ricky Lujan is the leading scorer for DBU with 16.8 points per game, and he leads the team with 20 steals.
Xavion Brown and Lujan are both among the top eight in the conference in assists per game. Brown is averaging 4.7 assists and Lujan is dishing out 3.7 assists per game. Brown is also grabbing 5.6 rebounds per game and has 19 steals in nine games.
Dallas Baptist is outscoring opponents, 86.9 -69.3, and leads the nation with 25.2 turnovers forced per game. The Patriots are third in the nation with 13.7 steals per game.
The Patriots have a seven-game winning streak and are 4-0 at home this season.
Midwestern State is 9-18 when visiting the Patriots and has lost its last six visits to the Burg Center, including a 58-56 loss two years ago.
Last season, Midwestern State was 3-8 on the road against conference opponents and lost their last five as the visitor against LSC foes.
The Mustangs continue their road trip with a stop at UT Tyler on Friday night. Tipoff at Louis Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
