Carter and Cash have double-doubles in Midwestern State's 69-65 win against St. Edward's

WICHITA FALLS, TX --Zarria Carter and Kerbie Cash both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Midwestern State women's basketball team past the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 69-65 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon.

Carter had 19 points and 17 rebounds, and Cash finished with a season-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Carisa Cortez scored a season-high 17 points and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range in the victory. Calyssa Sevier filled the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Midwestern State improved to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference.

Led by Carter's 10 offensive rebounds, Midwestern State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 21 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.

Midwestern State forced 23 St. Edward's turnovers while committing 20. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Sevier's four steals led the way individually for the Mustangs.

How It Happened

Midwestern State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.

St. Edward's built a 32-15 advantage before Midwestern State went on a 14-0 run to narrow the deficit to 32-29 at halftime.

Sevier opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game, 32-32, and a subsequent 11-point run  gave Midwestern State a 43-34 lead with 5:09 to play in the period. The Mustangs outscored the Hilltoppers in the third quarter, 26-12.

The Mustangs held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Midwestern State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 fourth-quarter points in the paint.

» Carter recorded her seventh double-double of the season, and Cash recorded her third double-double of the campaign.
» The Mustangs made half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down six of 12 shots.
» Carter, Cash, and Carisa Cortez combined to account for 77 percent of the Mustangs points.

» Janiah Perkins finished with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Hilltoppers.
