Mustangs set to run in snow at South Central Region Championships

DENVER -- Midwestern State competes in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championship Saturday afternoon at Washington Park. The women's 6K race begins at 4:15 p.m. (Central Time).

A total of 34 teams and a minimum of 24 individual selections not on advancing teams compete in the NCAA Division II Championships set for Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California. The top three teams from each of the eight regionals earn automatic qualification with 10 other selected in an at-large process. The top two individuals and any others finishing in the top five at regionals also advance to the championship. The remaining eight spots are selected through a similar at-large process.

The Top 25 individual finishers garner All-South Central Region accolades. Nine different harriers earned all-region accolades in program history led by Ashley Flores, who earned the honors three consecutive years in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Flores was a part of a quartet to gain honors in the regional championship season of 2011 joined by Brissia Montalvo, Janel Campbell and Kim Krezonoski. Montalvo also gained honors in 2010 along with Sydnee Cole, who was also an all-region runner in 2009. Katie Stepp, Kayla Hendrix and Lindsey Pate were the program's first all-region performers in 2008, while Gabby Ruiz was the last to gain honors in 2014.

Midwestern State is coming off its second-straight, third-place finish at the Lone Star Conference Championship. The Mustangs placed behind No. 6-ranked West Texas A&M and 27th-ranked Dallas Baptist at Dick Kleberg Park in Kingsville, Texas.

Junior Ella Pando earned all-conference honors for the second consecutive year after finishing 13th with a 6K time of 21:58.87, finishing just ahead of junior teammate Jadyn Dangerfield (22:22.45/17th).

Freshman Grace Pineda (22:43.63/24th), junior Lula Nolen (23:05.80/32nd), and junior Rosalene Reyes Perez (23:07.65/34th) also turned in team countable performances.

The South Central Region rates among the toughest in all of NCAA Division II with a field that includes 10 nationally ranked programs: No. 1 Adams State (Colo.), No. 3 Colorado State-Pueblo, No. 4 Colorado School of Mines, No. 6 West Texas A&M, No. 9 UC Colorado Springs, No. 11 Western Colorado, No. 15 Fort Lewis (Colo.), No. 17 Colorado Christian, No. 27 Dallas Baptist, and No. 29 Colorado Mesa.

The weather forecast calls for up to 18 inches of snow to fall in the Denver metro through Saturday morning.
