WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Gabriel Gacovicaj scored twice, Mere Escobar had a goal and an assist, and Midwestern State earned a 3-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship at Stang Park on Sunday afternoon. Midwestern State improved to 15-2-3 overall following the victory, and the Mustangs will host Fort Lewis in the third round of the tournament next week. The Skyhawks defeated UC Colorado Springs, 4-2, in the second round.
How it Happened
Midwestern State took a 1-0 lead when Gacovicaj scored his third goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Jaime Villagomez set up Gacovicaj with an early ball over the top and got his fourth assist of the season.
The Mustangs tacked on another score with a goal from Gacovicaj in the 52nd minute, assisted by Mere Escobar. Gacovicaj has scored four goals this season, and Escobar has 10 assists.
Escobar scored in the 81st-minute to seal the 3-0 victory. Escobar extended his school record with the 60th goal of his career and netted his 16th goal of this season. Johan Juarez assisted on the Escobar goal.
