Stangs open conference play on the road at Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State opens conference play on Saturday afternoon at Rip Griffin Center and faces No. 19-ranked Lubbock Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Mustangs are 1-4 and coming off a 78-48 loss to Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday night. The Bison scored 25 points off 20 turnovers and held MSU to 33.9 percent shooting.

Zarria Carter posted her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and a season-high 18 rebounds

Carter is the reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Week after scoring 37 points, grabbing 24 rebounds, blocking three shots and making five steals in two games against Rogers State and Central Oklahoma.

Carter leads the LSC with 12.4 rebounds per game, which is sixth in the nation among Division II players, and she is third in the league with 19.2 points per game. The senior from Mansfield, Texas, is also averaging 2.2 steals per game, which is fourth in the conference.

Freshmen Kerbie Cash and Calyssa Sevier are both averaging 7.4 points per game, which is second on the team, while sophomore Emillia Steele, who scored a season-high 10 points in the loss to Oklahoma Baptist, is pitching in 5.4 points per game.
Midwestern State is second in the conference with 44.8 total rebounds per game and 18.8 offensive rebounds per game.

Lubbock Christian has opened the season with a 6-0 record and won its conference opener over St. Edward's, 61-56.

The Lady Chaps, who average 69 points per game, have been outscoring their opponents by 17.5 points per game.

Lubbock Christian leads the conference and is 15th among Division II programs with a 3-point field goal percentage of 39.7. The Lady Chaps hit eight 3-pointers per game, which is third-best in the LSC.

The Lady Chaps are also the best free-throw shooting team in the conference at 78.4 percent and make 16.3 free throws per game.

Grace Foster is the leading scorer in the LSC and is 15th in the nation with 21.2 points per game, and she is the fourth-leading rebounder in the conference with 9.5 boards per game.

Foster is coming off a 22-point, 11-rebound performance as Lubbock Christian won its conference opener over St. Edward's on Thursday night, 61-56.

Lubbock Christian has won its last nine meetings with the Mustangs, including a 73-53 victory in at Rip Griffin Center last season. Carter scored 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the loss for the Mustangs. Audrey Robertson, who is averaging 15 points per game this season, scored 23 points in the victory for the Lady Chaps.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 23-13, but is 7-9 when visiting Lubbock Christian.

The Mustangs last win in the series came in December of 2014, when Dianna Jones scored 24 points, and Andrea Carter finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.in a 73-70 triumph at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Tuesday night to face UT Dallas in a non-conference game that will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
