WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Senior Pierre Sanders' all-around performance keyed Midwestern State to its third-straight win as the Mustangs claimed a 73-50 victory over St. Mary's in the Lone Star Conference opener Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs (4-1, 1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Sanders, who had 16 points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Mason Gibson tacked on 15 points and two steals and Jonathan Jackson chipped in as well with 11 points off of the bench.
Midwestern State took advantage of great ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 16 assists on 29 made field goals. Sanders' seven assists were the most for the Mustangs and Matija Svetozarevic also contributed with three assists of his own.
Midwestern State did a great job disrupting Saint Mary's (TX) shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Will Shepherd's three rejections led the way individually for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs take on St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

After falling behind 10-6, Midwestern State went on an 8-0 run with 14:33 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Sanders, to take a 14-10 lead. The Mustangs then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 34-22 advantage. Midwestern State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 34 points close to the basket.
Midwestern State kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Shepherd's three, to grow the lead to 46-26 with 14:22 to go in the contest. The Mustangs kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 73-50 win. Midwestern State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 39 total points.
