Defensive effort not enough for MSU in 58-52 loss to Central Oklahoma

WICHITA FALLS, TX --The Midwestern State women's basketball team held Central Oklahoma to just 1-for-17 shooting from 3-point range, but the Mustangs fell to the Bronchos at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday night, 58-52.

Midwestern State (1-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Zarria Carter, who had 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Carisa Cortez tacked on 12 points, and Kerbie Cash helped out with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Carter pulled down eight of the  27 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second chance points for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State's defense held Central Oklahoma 38.5 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 6-2, Midwestern State went on an 8-0 run with 4:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Trinidi King, to take a 10-6 lead. The Mustangs then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 13-9 advantage. Midwestern State capitalized on seven Central Oklahoma turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

The Mustangs maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 24-22 edge. Midwestern State scored four of its 11 total points in the period on second chance opportunities created by pulling down six offensive rebounds.

Midwestern State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Bronchos 42-33 entering the fourth. Midwestern State played well near the basket, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.

Central Oklahoma kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 50-36 advantage before Midwestern State went on a 14-0 run and tied the game, 50-50. Central Oklahoma responded and outscored the Mustangs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 58-52.
