SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State put together one of its most complete performances of the season in a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship and reached the semifinals for the third consecutive season.
The Mustangs face top-seeded Angelo State in a semifinal match at LeGrand Soccer Complex on Friday at 5 p.m.
Midwestern State is 11-3-5 overall this season and earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament with a 6-2-5 record in conference play. MSU remained fourth in the third edition of the South Central Region Rankings released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Committee. The Mustangs are 4-3-2 in away matches this season.
Angelo State claimed its fifth LSC regular season championship in program history with a 9-0-3 record against conference opponents, and the Rambelles are 11-0-5 overall. Angelo State is No. 3 in the South Central Region Rankings.
Midwestern State hosted the Rambelles at Stang Park on Oct. 5, and the result was a 2-2 draw. Isabell Cruz scored the equalizer for MSU in the 61st minute. Sanai Stewart gave Angelo State a 1-0 with a goal in the sixth minute, but MSU pulled even with a
Madison Brinkley goal almost four minutes later. In the 14th minute, Shaelyn Ward reclaimed the lead with a goal for Angelo State.
The two sides last met in the conference tournament two years ago in a quarterfinal match at San Angelo, and the Mustangs advanced on penalty kicks after Olivia Okoye scored for MSU in the 88th minute to force overtime.
The Mustangs have won five LSC postseason tournament matches determined by penalty kicks.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Rambelles, 18-16-9, and is 6-8-6 when visiting Angelo State.
Nyxalee Munoz, who scored two goals in the quarterfinal victory over St. Mary's, leads the Mustangs with eight goals this season and also has three assists for 19 points.
Lexi Beck leads the Stangs with 20 points from five goals and a conference-leading 10 assists. Beck, a senior from Fort Worth, Texas, has surpassed Kari Bristow for the program's career record with 27 assists. Beck has also scored 19 career goals during her four seasons at MSU.
Senior
Cassidy Savoy has a career-high seven goals and has added two assists for 16 points this season. Savoy has 21 goals and 11 assists in her career at Midwestern State.
Goalkeeper
Allison Dellis has a 1.18 goals-against average and has made 89 saves with a save percentage of .817 through 17 matches for the Mustangs. Dellis is 9-3-5 and has posted three clean sheets.
Midwestern State has a plus-20 goal differential this season, outscoring opponents, 41-21. In the second half of matches, MSU has outscored its opponents, 27-11. On the road, MSU is outscoring opponents, 13-12.
Ryan Spence is in his seventh season as the head coach at Midwestern State and has led the Mustangs to 50-54-21 record during that time. He also coached a season at Eastern New Mexico and has a career record of 55-63-27.
Midwestern State is 2-6-2 against the Rambelles during Spence's tenure as the head coach.
Travis McCorkle has a career record of 238-141-39 as a women's soccer head coach, including a 198-94-35 record during his 17 seasons guiding the program at Angelo State.
Thirteen different players have scored at least one goal for Angelo State this season, led by freshman forward Madison Bourzikas, who leads the team with five goals and one assist this season.
Sanai Stewart and Christina Clark have each scored four goals, and Abby James has netted three goals for the Rambelles. Katelin Heise, Madison Maxey, Shaelyn Ward, Kailee Meyer and Graycen Rasmussen have each scored two goals.
Maxey and Heise lead the Rambelles with three assists, and Stewart has assisted on two goals for Angelo State.
Goalkeeper Amber Lockwood has allowed eight goals over 17 matches and leads the conference with a save percentage of .874 and a goals-against average of 0.48. Lockwood is 11-1-5 with 10 clean sheets, and she combined with Melyna Martinez for two more shutouts.
Angelo State has a goal differential of plus-22, outscoring opponents, 30-8. In the first half of matches, the Rambelles have scored 17 goals while only conceding three.
The winner of Friday's match meets either Dallas Baptist or Texas Woman's in the championship match on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
