No. 14-ranked Mustangs welcome Dallas Baptist to Stang Park

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 14-ranked Midwestern State looks to extend its winning streak to four matches as Dallas Baptist visits Stang Park for a mid-week match on Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Midwestern State is tied with St. Mary's on points atop the Lone Star Conference table. The Rattlers have a match in hand, while MSU is 3-1-0 with nine points. The 3-0-0 Rattlers and the Mustangs lead 2-1-1 Oklahoma Christian by two points.

Dallas Baptist last appeared at Stang Park for the LSC Postseason Tournament championship last fall. Liam Pritchard, Gabriel Gacovicaj, and Samuele Muroni scored goals as MSU rolled to a 5-0 victory. Mere Escobar assisted on two goals in the victory, including the second goal of the game for Maycol Reyes. Johan Juarez also had two assists, and Gacovicaj assisted on Reyes first goal in the fourth minute of the match.

Midwestern State has never lost to the Patriots, boasting a 23-0-3 record in the all-time series. DBU has suffered 10 consecutive losses at Stang Park. The two sides played a 2-2 draw in the 2022 LSC Postseason Tournament in San Antonio, but the Mustangs advanced with a 3-1 advantage on penalty kicks.

The Mustangs won at Dallas Baptist in the regular season last year, 3-0, as Pritchard scored a goal while Escobar and Jecsi Orellana had assists for the Stang Gang.

Escobar has scored 12 goals this season and is third-leading goal scorer in the country among NCAA Division II players. The senior from Austin, Texas, is tied with Pritchard for the team lead with five assists and is second in the nation with 29 points. Harry Cooke of Queens (NY) has 14 goals and 33 points to lead the nation in both categories.

Escobar has 56 career goals at Midwestern State and is the third all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the program. Only Alvin Alexander and Kris Henderson have scored more goals wearing the Maroon & Gold. Alexander netted 58 goals from 1975-1978, and Henderson scored 58 goals from 1987-1990.

The prolific striker has scored three goals in six appearances against Dallas Baptist, including a two-goal performance in a 2-1 victory at Patriot Soccer Field in 2021.

Escobar earned LSC Player of the Week honors for the third time this season and for the seventh time in his career after scoring twice and adding an assist as the Mustangs posted wins over UT Tyler and Oklahoma Christian to extend their winning streak to three matches.

Escobar, Muroni, Gacovicaj and Max Gonzales all scored for the Mustangs, who improved to 5-0-0 at home this season, with a 4-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs have won their last 12 regular season matches on home ground, and they have won their last eight matches against LSC opponents on the MSU campus.

Midwestern State leads the conference and is the 11th highest scoring Division II team in the nation with 28 goals and has a plus-11 goal differential this season. The Mustangs also lead the conference with 80 points.

Opponents have scored 1.55 goals per match against the Mustangs. Daniel Robles has been the goalkeeper during the three-match winning streak for MSU and is 3-0-2 this season. The 6-2 junior from Tyler, Texas, has a 1.59 goals-against average with 13 saves and a save percentage of .591 in six appearances.

Head coach Michael Meachum is closing in on 100 career victories. In his seventh season at the helm, Meachum is 96-20-11.

Dallas Baptist arrives at Stang Park with a 2-3-5 overall record. The Patriots are 1-1-1 in conference play and 2-2-2 on the road this season.

Dallas Baptist is coming off a 4-0 victory at Sul Ross, which snapped a six-match winless streak. The Patriots had a string of four consecutive draws following a 3-1 loss at UC Colorado Springs and fell to Oklahoma Christian, 2-0, before defeating the Lobos last week.

Peyton Voelker leads the Patriots with five goals and two assists, while Hunter Dierlam has scored three goals and added two assists. Gavyn Rosales has scored twice for the Patriots. Evan Pustejovsky leads the team with three assists. Leo Larson and Mason Monroe each have two assists.

While DBU has scored 16 goals this season, it has also conceded 16 goals. Patrick Banich has been the primary goalkeeper and has a 1-3-5 record with a 1.78 goals-against average. Banich has made 24 saves and has a save percentage of .600.

Jess Jobe is in his fourth season as the head coach at Dallas Baptist and has a career record of 20-25-16.

Midwestern State is on the road this Saturday and makes its first-ever appearance at Lobo Soccer Field in Alpine, Texas, for its inaugural clash with Sul Ross State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
