Midwestern State thumps Lady Buffs for third-straight win

THE LEAD

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State dominated the front court on the way to a 75-55 win over West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference play Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Senior Kertisa Amos assumed the playmaker role with an all-around stat line of 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals; while senior Makayla Coy (19 points, 13 rebounds) and junior Zarria Carter (13 points, 11 rebounds) added double-doubles.

It was the third-straight win for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-9 on the season and evened their conference record at 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Midwestern State limited the Lady Buffs to four field goals in the first period, then closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to expand its lead to 19-8.

The Mustangs put together a complete 40 minutes by outscoring the Lady Buffs in each period and led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter.

LEADERS

-Senior forward Kertisa Amos connected on 9-of-18 shots to finish with 19 points while matching a season-high with nine rebounds to go along with a campaign-best six assists.
- Amos has scored between 14 and 19 points in eight of 10 games this season. She leads the Mustangs and ranks fifth in the LSC in scoring at 16.2 points per game.
- Senior forward Makayla Coy matched Amos for team-high honor with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Coy wrapped up her second double-double of the season by pulling down 13 rebounds.
- Junior forward Zarria Carter notched her third consecutive and fifth double-double of the season by finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
- Carter ranks eighth in the LSC in scoring at 15.1 points per game and is second in rebounding, pulling in 10.8 per game.
- Junior guard Nikki Green continued to shine in a reserve role, scoring 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. - Green has scored in double figures in four of six games since taking on a reserve role. She is averaging 14.4 points per game as MSU's sixth woman.
- WT sophomore guard Hollie Stalder broke out of a scoring slump by scoring a team-high 16 points off of the bench. She managed a total of 18 points over her previous four games after scoring in double figures in six consecutive games from November 11-December 2.

GAME NOTES

- Midwestern State delivered its second largest margin of victory against West Texas A&M and biggest win since beating the Lady Buffs 82-58 on November 8, 1978 in Wichita Falls.
- The 20-point margin of victory was MSU's largest over NCAA Division II competition since beating UT Tyler 75-50 on January 16, 2021.
- The Mustangs have won three consecutive games against Division II competition for the first time since winning five consecutive from January 10-23 during the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.
- Midwestern State shot a season-best 45.5 percent from the field, while taking a campaign-low eight 3-point shots.
- The Mustangs recorded at least 10 steals for the third straight game by finishing with 12, including four by Kertisa Amos, three by Zarria Carter, two each by Makayla Coy and Catalina Cortez, and one by Keara Felix.
- Midwestern State out-rebounded WT by 16 -- 50-34. It was the Mustangs largest rebounding margin this season.
