THE LEAD
FORT SMITH, Arkansas -- Baylee Fincher poured in a season-high 29 points and Arkansas-Fort Smith enjoyed its best scoring output of the season in a 96-84 win over Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference play Thursday night at Stubblefield Center.
The Lions snapped a three-game slide to improve to 6-12 on the season, while improving to 4-8 in league play.
Midwestern State suffered its fourth straight loss to fall to 4-14 and 4-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Arkansas-Fort Smith shot 50.8 percent from the floor and scored at least 25 points in each of the second, third, and fourth periods.
The Lions took advantage of the MSU defense at the arc, firing in 12 3-pointers on 26 attempts (46.2 percent).
LEADERS
- MSU senior
Kertisa Amos scored a season-high 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting, while grabbing seven rebounds. It was her third 20-point performance of the season. Amos raised her season scoring average to 16.2 points per game.
- Junior guard
Nikki Green scored 15 of her 18 points in the first half while returning to her sixth woman role. She buried four 3-pointers on her way to her fifth double-figure performance off of the bench this season.
- Junior forward
Zarria Carter notched her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 14 rebounds. She continues to lead the Lone Star Conference in rebounding with 11.1 per game.
- Junior guard Baylee Fincher was one of three Lions to record season-best scoring performances. The junior from Ponca City, Oklahoma, buried 7-of-10 shots with four 3-pointers while sinking all 11 of her free throws to finish with 29 points.
- Junior guard Riley Hayes buried five 3-pointers to finish with 21 points.
- Junior Morgan Browning connecting on 7-of-9 shots and was 5-for-5 from the charity stripe to book 20 points.
TEAM NOTES
- Midwestern State conceded 90 points for the third consecutive game.
- Arkansas-Fort Smith scored a campaign-high 96 points to better their previous high of 79 points scored against Texas A&M International on January 13.
- The Lions drilled a season-high 12 3-pointers just a game after Midwestern State allowed UT Permian Basin to hit 18 triples.
- Arkansas-Fort Smith evened the all-time series with MSU at four games each. The Lions, who are leaving for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association next season, won for the third time in four meetings against MSU at Stubblefield Center.
