WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- UT Permian Basin put a shooting display on the way to a 90-62 win over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Falcons buried a likely school record 18 3-pointers and improved to 13-3 on the season while moving to 8-2 in Lone Star Conference.
No other LSC program had hit more triples in a single game over the past 15 years since Texas A&M-Kingsville buried 19 against Texas A&M International on November 30, 2009. Although, Cameron also connected on 18 3s during the 2019-20 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Four different UT Permian Basin players connected on 3-pointers during an 18-2 run in the second period, allowing the Falcons to extend their lead to 41-21 when Morgan Helgeson burying UTPB's seventh triple of the first half with 2:16 remaining.
Kamryn Lemon added another before the break as the Falcons outscored Midwestern State 21-5 to break open the game in the second period.
UT Permian Basin fired in eight of its 20 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, but followed up by making 10 more in 18 attempts in the second half.
LEADERS
- Senior
Kertisa Amos notched the second double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting while going 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. She also matched a campaign best with 10 rebounds.
- Freshman
Kyla Speights connected on three 3-pointers on her way to a career-best 15 points. It was her fourth double-digit effort of the season.
- Freshman
Catalina Cortez, who has hit a 3-pointer in each of her last seven games, also booked a career best with 12 points.
- UTPB junior Morgan Helgesen knocked down six 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 22 points.
TEAM NOTES
- UT Permian Basin's 18 3-pointers were the most scored against Midwestern State in program history.
- UT Permian Basin extended its winning streak to three games by scoring a series-high 90 points against the Mustangs. MSU still leads the series, 11-7.
- UT Permian Basin is off to the best start in program history at 13-3.
- Midwestern State fell to 4-13 overall and dropped to 4-7 in Lone Star Conference play.
