Carter records fifth-straight double-double in 73-61 win at WNMU

THE LEAD

SILVER CITY, New Mexico -- Junior Zarria Carter continued to dominate the paint, notching her fifth-straight double while leading Midwestern State to a 73-61 win over Western New Mexico Thursday night at Drag's Court.

The Mustangs won for the fourth time in their last five games, improving to 4-10 overall and 3-3 in Lone Star Conference play.

Western New Mexico suffered its third consecutive loss and fifth in its last six games, dipping to 7-5 and 2-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Midwestern State broke the press and used a 14-2 run in the third period to break open a close game.

Carter connected on a pair of jumpers and a driving layup before Nikki Green buried a 3-pointer from the left wing to push the Mustangs' advantage to 50-39.

WNMU's Sydney Wright broke up the run with a left-angle jump shot with 4:14 left in the third, but Makayla Coy hit a pair of free throws and Zionna Barbee hit the first of two 3-pointers in the third to push MSU's advantage to 55-41.

The Mustangs led by as many as 17 in the fourth period.

LEADERS

- Midwestern State junior Zarria Carter logged her fifth consecutive and seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 25 points and 16 rebounds. She is one behind Texas Woman's forward Ashley Ingram.
- Carter took over the Lone Star Conference rebounding lead, pushing her average to 11.4 per game to move past UT Permian Basin's Alexus Quaadman (11.3 rebounds per game).
- The performance was Carter's fifth game with at least 20 points this season.
- Carter is average 18.6 points and 14.4 rebounds over her last five games.
- Fifth-year senior Makayla Coy logged her third double-double of the campaign, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She ranks sixth in the league at 8.4 rebounds per game.
- Junior guard Nikki Green matched a season-high by making three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points. She is shooting 50 percent from the arc (10-for-20) over her last four games.
- Sophomore guard Zionna Barbee hit two 3-pointers to finish with a campaign-best six points.
- Western New Mexico senior Sydney Wright scored a season-high 24 points.

TEAM NOTES

- Midwestern State have won two consecutive Lone Star Conference road games against different opponents for the first time since 2017-18. The Mustangs will be in search of three consecutive LSC road victories for the first time since 2015-16 Saturday at Eastern New Mexico.
- Midwestern State has now won four of its last five since starting the season with nine consecutive losses.
- Midwestern State snapped a two-game slid against Western New Mexico to take a 13-5 lead in the all-time series. WNMU swept its home-and-home against MSU last season.
- Midwestern State shot better than 40-percent from the field for the third time this season (41.4). The Mustangs connected on 6-of-11 shots from 3-point range to go over the 50-percent mark for the second time this season.
- The Mustangs' last three wins have come by double digits.
