THE LEAD
SILVER CITY, New Mexico -- Sophomore guard
Mason Gibson poured in a game-high 22 points to lead Midwestern State to a 90-77 win over Western New Mexico in Lone Star Conference Thursday night at Drag's Court.
The Mustangs took their second consecutive win to improve to 10-4 on the season, while leveling their league mark at 4-4.
Western New Mexico took its third consecutive loss to move to 3-9 and 1-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Midwestern State took control of the game by scoring 12-straight points fueled by 3-pointers by
Reggie Hill and
Mason Gibson to surge to a 36-18 lead with 6:44 to play in the first half.
MSU sophomore
Will Shepherd capped another 7-0 run as the Mustangs took a commanding 43-21 lead just over five minutes before halftime.
Western New Mexico opened the second half on a 17-6 run and pulled to within 10 points following a pair of 3-pointers by Jordan Williams to pull WNMU to within 61-51.
But Midwestern State led by as many as 25 points down the stretch.
LEADERS
- Sophomore
Mason Gibson scored 20-or-more points for the third time this season, finishing with a game-high 22 points. Gibson knocked won 5-of-11 shots including a pair of 3-pointers while going 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
- Senior
Pierre Sanders scored in double figures for the 10th time this season, going for 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
- Sophomore
Duncan Alevok enjoyed his fifth double-digit effort of the season, going for 10 points and five rebounds, while swatting two shots.
- Redshirt-sophomore
Amaechi Chukwu pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds.
- WNMU freshman Donovan Black scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to match Jordan Williams, who connected on three 3-pointers, for team-high honors.
TEAM NOTES
- Midwestern State won its first game in Silver City, since beating WNMU 81-78 on February 14, 2019. MSU leads the all-time series, 15-3.
- The Mustangs are off to their best start through 14 games since the 2016-17 squad also improved to 10-4 with an 80-73 win over UT Permian Basin on January 7 in Wichita Falls.
- Midwestern State claimed its second consecutive double-digit win and seventh of the season.
- Ten different players scored for Midwestern State, as the Mustangs controlled a 28-18 edge in bench points.
