Rambelles score last minute goal to defeat Mustangs, 1-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- For more than 89 minutes, Midwestern State and Angelo State played to a 0-0 stalemate at ASU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. With 28 seconds remaining in the Lone Star Conference clash, Brianna Rodriguez scored her second goal of the season, and the Rambelles ended the Mustangs four-match winning streak with a 1-0 victory.

Angelo State (2-5-1) snapped a five-match losing streak and improved to 2-0-1 at home this season. In the waning seconds, Carrringtyn Johnson threw the ball into Allyson Reed, who was outside the area on the left side. Reed was able to make a pass around Cassidy Savoy and put the ball in the path of Mariah Griffin, who took the ball to the byline and delivered a low cross inside the 6-yard box. Rodriguez scored from point-blank range after goalkeeper Lexy Jackson went to the ground on the near post.

The Mustangs were outshot in the match, 13-5, and Midwestern State (4-2-2) did not have a shot on goal. In the first half, the Rambelles outshot MSU, 5-1. The Mustangs failed to convert on five corner kicks, and Angelo State was not able to capitalize on three corner-kick opportunities.

Jackson made two saves during the match. Jackson stopped a shot from Sanai Stewart in the 34th minute, and Mia Czarnecki was denied by Jackson in the 54th minute.

Amber Lockwood, a junior transfer from Oklahoma State, recorded her second clean sheet of the season but did not make a save in 90 minutes for the Rambelles. Lockwood is 2-5-1 in goal for the Rambelles.

McKenna Jenkins took two of the five shots for MSU. Savoy, Marissa Resendez and Lillia Besedin also took shots for the Mustangs, who are 6-8-6 all-time at San Angelo.

Midwestern State returns to Stang Park for a match Wednesday night against Eastern New Mexico. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
